I'm sooooo back logged with games I can't even imagine jumping in but from the reports, a true GOTY contestant.

Yeah the only way to somewhat save is put it in rest mode supposedly but I know there were some issues with it bricking PS5's early on if you put in rest mode so I am not going to do that. They also said the runs can be long as well. Also seems like it is very difficult but I am not as concerned with that.

You should be okay with putting it into rest mode now. I think the original problem had to do more with particular games causing the issue (Spiderman: MM was the main one) I havent heard any credible sources mention a bricked PS5 since those first couple of weeks.

Difficulty is not an issue for me either as long as the game is good enough to keep me invested. I haven't heard anyone compare it to Demon Souls/Bloodborne so it can't be that difficult lol. Since that's seems to be the way reviewers measure difficulty.

I saw two things were people said it was harder than Dark Souls:

How hard is Returnal? Well, according to some, Returnal could be a very difficult game, even harder than Dark Souls or Demon's Souls games, which are known for their demanding gameplay.

I also saw this in the Arstechnica review:

            CRASHES AND SAVES
One reason for the static zones might be Housemarque's efforts to reduce crashes. Sadly, ahead of the game's day-one patch, Returnal is full of crashes.
Nobody likes dying in a roguelite, even if that's the norm for this genre. You'll accrue a bunch of goodies, only to fall victim to a brutal moment, but you can at least learn from the debacle and quickly get back to full battling speed in the next run. There's no learning from crashes, however, and I've already faced three brutal ones that stymied my ability to progress through the review period. The worst one, after a four-hour run, resulted in a wild domino effect of HUD elements disappearing and other menu text remaining frozen on top of the action, culminating in the game getting stuck on a "lore" text box.

Housemarque may very well resolve these crashes with its promised "day one" patch, and thankfully, I have not lost any permanent upgrades thanks to crashes thus far. Getting back up to speed after my crashes has been annoying but doable. But one thing that will remain unpatched until further notice is the game's bizarre take on saving progress. You can't savescum your way through tough moments in this and other roguelites, and that's fine. Returnal's issue, however, is that players cannot tap a "save and quit" button, then power their PS5 consoles down. The only option is to either leave the console on and paused or put the PS5 into rest mode. And not everyone feels as positively about always-on electronics as Housemarque and Sony might.

All three of my biggest crashes came after bringing my PS5 back online from rest mode, without any way to safely reboot the game and keep my run's progress alive. Sony reps did not immediately answer whether a manual save option might be added in a future update. Until they do, however, anyone who's prone to angrily throw a controller after an unfair game crash should exercise extreme Returnal caution.

So my countdown timer says this will be playable at 11pm EST. I don't usually preorder games but I know typically they go live at midnight. So is the countdown timer just weird or will it be playable at 11?

Lack of saves is going to hold me back, at least for now.

Played about an hour and a half last night. Died twice so far.

                    - whatever load times there might be there have been well hidden

                    - Graphically seems solid, no frame rate drops. Main character looks good.

                    - The sound design is very atmospheric I imagine the 3D headphones or probably any quality headphones would make it really immersive.

                    - The trigger effect for secondary firing is an interesting mechanic in a good way. Half press is normal fire full press is secondary. The resistance of the trigger from the dual shock makes it pretty intuitive.

                    - I can see the lack of being able to save mid cycle getting changed but I also could see how it might stay how it is with the way the game works.

                    - found an easter egg to another housemarque game.

Have only had the chance to play for an hour or so, but wow this game is pretty damn amazing. This feels and looks like a true next gen game for sure. Gameplay is very Control like which I love. And from the little I played, this game is pretty hard at least in the beginning. There’s one type of enemy that during the 2 different times I encountered it, it totally wrecked me lol.

Got to the first boss and almost beat it on my first try but ended up dying. I’m figuring out more and more how this game works and it just feels so rewarding. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll just say again, this game is amazing. I highly recommend anyone with a PS5 to grab this.

Good first session tonight. The vibes of a Ridley Scott movie mixed with Live, Die, Repeat were working for me. The audio is top notch atmosphere, and then the haptic feedback is really only rivaled by Astro's.

After about 3 hours, died a couple times, got a couple power unlocks, got to first boss, got some story bits. It's a very good roguelite with higher quality presentation than you would generally get out of this sort of game.

The loop is a good time so far, hoping it holds up.

Just wanted to add that I’m playing this on my LG CX, while wearing an Arctis 7p headset. The game just looks stunning and then the audio with the headset is insane as well. I’m busy all weekend but all I wanna do is watch baseball and play this game lol.

Had my longest cycle yesterday, a little over 2 hours, just scraping by the first boss on my first attempt.

So far I don't think the game is above average on the difficulty scale. Everytime I've had to start a new cycle it's usually because I become over confident and "died".

I think what makes this game work is that there isn't a "correct" way to play. Being cautious, going in guns blazing, exploring etc. all have their up and downsides. The cycles encourage trying new approaches.
