I've probably moved too fast, since I have a huge army and invested huge in the new era infantry, calvary, and archers so my economy is ****. A lot of my cities keep revolting, and I can't bump my taxes up high to make up money.

I did take advantage of diplomats by offering cease fires to the gauls in return for them giving me a territory. I then break it later to keep them from building up much.

I don't know what I did to piss off spain or briton, as we were allies and had opened trade rights. They've both backed the gauls...go figure. A fight against three factions is hard as hell.
I find the Gauls pretty difficult. Are you on the hardest difficulty? My problem with them is at the beginning, by the time i've been in the game more than an hour and a half they are pretty much done. The difficulty with the gauls is that early on they have numbers and numbers and numbers, and you as the Julii might be able to muster a good size army, while they can just hit you over and over again. I might beat them 3 times in a row in one turn, only to lose to the fourth and lose the best of my army in that battle.

I bought the game and I must say its really addicting. Its my first time playing any time of simulation type game andd I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on how to take over a large city with proper fortifications (like archers on the walls)? Also elephants?

edit: I found seige towers work pretty effectively against walls.

Yeah seige towers are the way, or sometimes sapping can work if the walls are well defended. I could remember Dacia took over one of my really built up cities (huge walls) and beating them on the walls was nigh on impossible, and I had much more of a shot going through the broken down walls. Elephants the best thing if you are in the open field is skirmishers and just spread out your lines, don't get clumped up that is when they do the most damage. I've never seen a phalanx against an elephant but if it broke the front line you'd be in trouble.

I just started a new game today with Egypt (I've usually only played as the Roman factions) and have found it much more challenging in battle, I think it's because as Rome I had everything down way too well.

I almost bought this game at Best Buy today but have a bunch of other games I need to play through first before I make the plunge.

Sounds incredible though and I can't believe I missed this one.
