got into it a bit more, the deck and flak guns are pretty cool...I sunk two easy ships with torpedos, but have to get closer for others...that's pretty fun, and eventually I could go on the hard mode and have to figure out angles and crap, for now I'm using auto lock on, I'd never hit anything myself right now. Really fun game though, just not for those looking for instant killing, takes a bit to get used to how it all works

Re: Silent Hunter III goes gold
I was browsing the ubisoft forum and found a few handy tips. I saw a lot of dud torpedoes in the tutorials. I don't think the minimum range was actually in the manual, but I wondered about that as I was getting into the middle of a convoy shooting point blank duds.
# The remark that the torpedoes explode only at 90 degrees is wrong.
# If you are too close from the targeted ship (under 300 meters the torpedo will not be able to arm and the result will be a dud).
# We also implemented the probability to have more duds in the beginning of the war
# Also the deflections that may appear when a torpedo hit are dependant of the ship geometry and angles of hit
# In the beginning of the war the duds happen more often
The resolution issue is a technical one... We already have drops in frame rate at high time compressions (remember that at any time the game calculate the lone ships and convoys in the whole world)... a higher resolution at the graphic present in game and the lots and lots of calculations means to kill even high end machines. You could improve the aspect of the game using a glare feature (a software antialiasing - use Shift + Page Up/Page Down to increase/ decrease the software antialiasing)
For the Navigation Map we’ve implemented a more flexible feature:If you point with your mouse on a specific spot you could center that spot on your map with Ctrl + Left Click.
We’ve already implemented some shortcuts to help the player in this case (Shift +Del - Delete all objects for selected tool and Ctrl + Left Click – insert waypoint between a selected waypoint and the next waypoint – working only with the waypoint tool selected) For more clues about shortcuts from SHIII press F1 key – we’ve added a help page on v1.1)Comment

Re: Silent Hunter III goes gold
Thank you. One of the few games that I have played that just screams to have screen shots taken of it
I played the first single mission last night where you have to sneak into a british taskforce that has several battleships. Edge of your seat sort of stuff waiting for the right time to come back to periscope depth. On my 3rd try, I was finally able to set up a beauty of a salvo - 4 torps fired from 500 m at an almost perfect 90 degrees aobPut her down and got the heck out of there in silent running. Makes me want to break out Das Boot.
I'm going to try and figure out the daunting task of setting up firing solutions manually tonight. There are so many little things that add soo much to the game...Seeing the sub respond from the command room - how it rocks and tilts, the sound effects, the ability to plot targets on the map, and the crew management...just outstanding.Comment

Re: Silent Hunter III goes gold
A few screens from my first patrol
Leaving port at sunset in my Type II on sept. 1st 1939.
The results which are easier to see in the bigger picture. 1 cargo ship downed, about 6000 tons. She split in two on the way down.
Sadly, the torps fired at another cargo ship were duds. Back to port already as I'm out of torpedoes. Hopefully Ubi will release a patch with resupply at sea otherwise there will a lot of short patrols.Last edited by mudtiger; 03-18-2005, 07:51 PM.Comment

Nice shots. Just picked up this game today. Excellent so far. Makes me think of the first game I ever got for a PC...Silent Service. Silent Service II is still one of my favorite games of all time.
While I'm sure I will love this game...I wish someone would redo the ALLIED submarine service again. It's tough playing the Germans(and I'm Austrian by descent!)....I hate to sink allied craft...well almost...
anyway...are you sure they had resupply at sea for the Axis?..especially early in the war. Maybe later?
