Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
I will probably buy the console that supports backwards compatibility. Last thing I want is to have to throw away a bunch of perfectly balanced games because they won't work on the new system. Given what I've heard, the PS3 will most likely be backwards compatible but the Xbox360 won't.
Another thing to consider is that EA will probably control most of the market in sports games (at least in football and college basketball so far) which means that they will probably develop for the PS3 and port to the Xbox360 (remember NCAA Football 2005?).
So unless something comes out to the contrary, I'll probably pick up a PS3, sell my PS2, and keep my old Xbox for the old ESPN games (and MVP Baseball)."20 years from now they'll be saying Willis Reed pulled a Curt Schilling." -- Theo EpsteinComment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
So you just throw your old consoles away? To a TRUE gamer, backwards compatable means NOTHING! We all keep oour old consoles. I can still play Colico, Atari, Nintendo, Sega.... I feel thats why if 360 is not backwards, its b/c the Xbox community seems to be the hardcore gamers.Originally posted by yo136I will probably buy the console that supports backwards compatibility. Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
if the PS3 comes out in March in Japan, doesn't that mean a fall 2006 release for it in the US? I think a year headstart for the Xbox 2 (or whatever it's called), coupled with very strong 3rd party support, could really shift the dominance. I think the general gamer (read: not us) will really only buy one system, and if Madden, Live, and other games come out for Xbox 2 then that could sway people into picking that up instead of waiting for the PS3. Could be a very interesting time to follow gaming in general.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
I see the PS3 dominating just like the PS2 has. Yes the XBox will get a head start but this time around the PS3 will be just as powerful as the 360 at a minimum. People who buy multiple consoles really play no role in which console is dominant because they are giving sales to both companies. I think the casual gamer that loves his PS2 will wait for PS3.
At this point I like the XBox better only because the online functinality is a lot better and some of the games are "prettier" Other than that I think the PS2 exclusives are better than XBox as a whole and they will continue to have better 3rd party support. You have to look at World Wide sales. The Xbox may sell well here but in Japan it is no contest.
I will own both so to me it does not matter but I just thought I wouild throw in my $.02Actually...believe it or not from my physique... I'm a light eater - Clay T. ShaverComment

Nope, thats about it! You are now hardcore. I mean you must be, you have 150000 posts here, you have to be a hardcore guy. I mean with all those posts how do you have time to play?Originally posted by NYJetsThanks for the heads up.

Seriously though man, if the console is not backwards compatable...is that REALLY going to keep you from buying it? I doubt it very much.Comment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
it might be, for those that trade in an older console to get a newer one (when I was a lot younger I didn't have much cash, so had to trade in my Genesis and all the games to get a Playstation). Not everyone's self sufficient, or is willing to spend all that much on a gaming system.Originally posted by Wilson10Nope, thats about it! You are now hardcore. Backwards compatable isn't a big deal for me personally, but I understand how it could matter to some.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Agreed. In Japan ps1 was beating the XBOX for most of the first year LOL
Microsoft is going to fall off with the next system abit IMO.
it will be like the dreamcast, good hype and decent sales, but then PS3 will explode out of the gate, just like they did with PS1 against the Dreamcast, and could blow xbox out of the water for along time. say what you want about microsoft's marketing, Sony is the best at getting hype and amrketing to work. I am looking forward to seeing both systems. Because to be honest, with Sony haing the better games by far, and probably a much more powerful system, I want to be given a legitimate reason to purchase microsoft's system as well.Comment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
It probably would for me. I mean, the hardware and 3rd party game support play a huge factor as well (look at the DS), but if it's backwards compatible, that means I can sell the old system. Think of it as a rebate for loyal customers. Would you keep your PS2 if the PS3 did all the same things? Did you keep your PS1 after the PS2 came out?Originally posted by Wilson10Seriously though man, if the console is not backwards compatable...is that REALLY going to keep you from buying it? Like I said, if the PS3 is backwards compatible, but the Xbox360 isn't, then I'll keep my Xbox and sell my PS2. If it's the other way around, I'll get the Xbox360, sell my Xbox, and keep my PS2."20 years from now they'll be saying Willis Reed pulled a Curt Schilling." -- Theo EpsteinComment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
I'd love for the XBOX 360 to be backwards compatible so I can continue to play MVP2005, but if it's not, I'll just hold on to my XBOX. I was burned with PS2 by having to buy two of them over the course of two years, and I've had one XBOX total for 2 years. I certainly hope that Sony has a better track record with PS3 than they've had with the PS2 and to a certain extent, the PSP and problems with it's display.Comment

Re: XBOX2 vs PS3
No it won't not even close. Do you understand why Dreamcast failed? It wasn't because it came out earlier, it wasn't because of PS2 hype. It failed because they lacked big name 3rd parties like EA, Sega made stupid design choices, they were coming off 3 failed consoles, and the fact Sega was having money problems.Originally posted by RailStoneAgreed. MS has tons of cash, they're coming off great Xbox success, and they have pretty much every big 3rd party out there developing for it. It's not going to just fade away when PS3 comes out, if you think that your crazy. PS3 will sell strong, but it's not going to push the Xbox 360 aside, far from it. MS will give Sony a run, they won't beat them, but they'll get closer than they did this gen.Comment
