I have access to my little bench in my garage. Simple bench with the leg thing and a pulley(?).

I've been doing some bent over rows and I think pulldowns using the pulley to work my back, but I'm wondering if there are any more that I can do using dumbbells. Basically looking for nice, simple workouts that are effective.

Yea I wasn't talking about people who have a clinically diagnosed mental handicap. Obviously I am sympathetic to those people and their family but understand they don't want sympathy...so I don't know what to say!

I was using handicap = weakness...which I believe was the way razr meant it to be.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a huge % of the population who is overweight just because of mental handicaps and physical disorders. It's safe to say most are overweight because they are lazy, uneducated on nutrition, and have no desire to get in shape.

You can actually take that barbell from the bench and include another great exercise for your back:

          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5_eCcgvTHqo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5_eCcgvTHqo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This one is more fun to watch...
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rdNzEWlLHsA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rdNzEWlLHsA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

          Another exercise:
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BibQp6vp7c&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BibQp6vp7c&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And you can do these with your barbell as well:
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cs-wOHN5tdw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cs-wOHN5tdw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

*Personally I like to do a set of barbell bent over row then go straight into a set of deadlifts

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

Pullups are great for the back too and you can usually find somewhere around the house to do some.

Stew i agree with you completely that 80-90% of people are fat because they either choose to be and don't want to or don't know how to do something about it. Seriously though with just about everyone having access to the internet saying people are fat because of lack of knowledge about nutrition loses some of it's merits. If it is important enough to someone they will make the time to do the research.

Personally i struggle with my damn appetite always being so strong. I have no trouble with working out and enjoy my weights and daily cardio but i seem to be hungry most of the time. It's weird because i can have a massive lunch (say two big sandwiches on wholegrain bread including a whole chicken breast, lettuce, tomato etc) or a tiny lunch (say a small salad with fat free dressing) and i'm still starving by the afternoon. I then overeat at night undoing all my good work.

            Gets very frustrating.....

Try to get kids to think long term when they're young, explain to them how damaging it can be if you do not properly manage one of these areas of your life. I know it's very hard to get kids to see the big picture and not live in the moment but we need to try.

These should be taken every semester in some format, they are the most important three areas of peoples' lives in this day and age, IMO.
                That's a good post.

I can see what stewaat was referring to in his posts, although he did come off a bit harsh. I'm sure some overweight individuals certainly took offense to it.

I'm harsh because it's a very serious topic that is "taboo" because you can hurt people's feelings.

~750,000 people die yearly in the U.S. from heart disease (primarily heart attack) and proper nutrition would greatly reduce this.

I believe the % could be a little under 30 from more recent research because cancer is creeping up the list.

Actually I did read your post. And if you look in the quotes you did say physical handicaps. And I'm refering to people who are overweight that are depressed or have had it drilled into their head that they are fat and they will never lose and eat to find confort. I've known plenty of people like that.

So you're referring to people who feel sorry for themselves and instead of trying to help them we should say "It's okay if you're overweight and are going to probably have a shorter life."

Do you get my point? The culture is way too sensitive to calling out those who are lazy and feel sorry for themselves. It's call mental weakness as ehh referred to earlier.

I have no sympathy for those who choose to be overweight. It's a choice for the large portion of those who are overweight.

If people are depressed they should get help so they don't eat for comfort.

Every time I see I "bigger" person at the gym I truly want to go up to them and tell them about health & nutrition but the reality is people don't want to hear the truth. Most go to the gym and work out as an excuse to eat unhealthy. People want results overnight and they don't happen.

Do I need to go on? Do you get my point?

People need to quit feeling sorry for themselves, bottom line. Also if they are happy being overweight, so be it. It's their life but I definitely have more respect for people who take care of their bodies. To those who try but have physical limitations holding them back, I have the same respect.

Would you except a drug addict or an alchoholic to just one day wake up and go "I'm a drug addict. I need help" and go to rehab? That's not how it works. Same thing with an overweight person. They have the same type of depression that leads an alchoholic to alchohol and a drug addict to drugs. It's no different. Overweight people aren't just going to wake up one morning and just go "I need to lose weight. Let's go to the gym". It's not a matter of initiative either. People don't choose to be overweight or do drugs or alchohol most of the time. Most people are trying to find an out from some sort of mental stress. For some it's working out. For some it's alchohol, drugs, or eating. You can't say that any of them are different than the other.

                            Let's agree to disagree buddy!

Anyways let's please get this thread back to the original purpose: If anybody has questions or concerns and needs a little help, post away!

Also let us know about your progress!

I currently had a little bad stretch of eating not so great around Halloween. Today is day 5 back on track and I feel so much better it's unreal! My threshold is 2 weeks so hopefully I can truck right through it this time!

Seriously, when I hit 2 weeks I feel like a drug addict on withdrawal from sugar/sweets.

BTW did you know that liking sweets is in your genetics? I saw something on TV about it, so it must be true...or at least I'll use that as an excuse when I treat myself every once in a while. Just gotta spread out the cheat meals!

I disagree with these 100%. I know plenty of obese people who are very happy with their life as a whole and don't care if they're overweight. Most of them abide by the "live every day as it's your last" mantra, which if that's their decision who am I to judge? It's their life, let them live it how they want to. Anyway, for them there is no depression, nothing is "driving them to eat". Not everyone who is overweight is addicted to food. They are lazy, have no discipline and/or uneducated in many instances.

Yea we all would like to be able to eat everything we want, no one wants to just eat healthy foods.

It's hard work for everyone, some people it's worth it, some people it's not, that's their choice.
