If I am trying to lose weight,b ut still want to lift... should I lift lighter weights, with more reps? Then once I lose the weight I want and I want to gain muscle mass, do heavy weights?

I've been doing my cardio and weight lifting. I'll probably do 25-30 minutes on the tredmil, 25-30 minutes of free weights, and 10 minutes on the stepmill. Been a good routine for me so far.

Also, what kind of classes are you taking again Dook?

Personally i would continue to lift as heavy as possible while cutting to maintain as much muscle mass as possible. Your not really trying to loose weight, your trying to loose fat so the more muscle you keep the better imo and the better you'll look.

It's true that it's hard to gain muscle mass while you are in a calorie deficit (unless your a newb to weights, on roids or a teenager) but if you if you cut down on your weights you'll lose muscle as well as fat and then you may end up being the dreaded "skinny fat".

Here is an email that my professor sent me:

            Dominique,

I do not have much information on ketogenic diets because the idea seemed ridiculous to me (and to most educated people). The primary fuel for skeletal muscle during intense exercise (like resistance training) is carbohydrate. Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is limited when glycogen stores are depleted. Skeletal muscle atrophy is stimulated when glycogen stores are depleted. Ketogenic diets by design require carbohydrate stores to be depleted.

I used keto stix when I was dieting during bodybuilding but for the exact opposite reason, when I saw that I was going into ketosis (elevated ketones in urine) I would increase my carbohydrate intake. I got leaner and retained more muscle during my precontest diets that anyone else I knew.

Stay away from fad diets! Practice intelligent sports nutrition. Get information from ACSM and ADA (see attached) and not popular press.

That's my 2 cents! Thanks for asking,
            Dr Magyari

One thing to take into account is that your professor was a bodybuilder, who had a much more rigorous training schedule than Joe Schmoe.

I believe everybody has stuff that works for them. I've seen people on keto for years and all of their physical health indicators (BP, choles., est.) were improved along with body composition.

I was on keto for over a year and got in the best shape of my life.

Currently I'm off it and have slipped a little with my diet. Keto helped me stay disciplined while trying to cut. It's all about what works best for each person.

                I see what you're saying.

He wasn't saying that you can't gain muscle on a Keto. Just that it's not the BEST way one should go about when trying to gain the maximum amount of muscle.

I'm going to start reading into Keto diets. But right now, I wouldn't attribute all the benefits you brought up to Keto.

If one isn't eating well, and then starts to eat better. It doesn't matter what diet they're using, any positive change to one's diet will increase his or her health if their diet was bad to begin with.

Especially if you are combining that with exercise, which will definitely have a positive impact on health indicators, independent of exercise.

I just took a class last semester all on the epidemiology of physical activity. A bunch of studies showed that exercise has a positive impact on things like BP, cholesterol, BF, Glucose, etc, all independent of diet.

So again I don't think one can just attribute it to Keto. But, I do agree that some things may just work better for different people.

Definitely agree. Personally I believe building muscle is better with a traditional diet and I view keto as a better cutting/maintenance diet.

BTW TMagic do you think sat fats have any place in a traditional diet? Or should we limit this and stick to unsat fats?

After all this time, I still can't gain weight. I've been lifting daily, taking Muscle Milk and creatine, and I haven't gained a pound. I even ate crappy, fattening food and didn't gain.

I have gotten stronger, though. My bench before I started lifting was like 75, and now I'm at 135 and I've only been going for a month and a half...definition is there, weight is not.

You probably have a super Metabolism like me, that just means you have to up your Calorie intake even further to make gains. It's tough though I'm not a big eater and get filled easily... so it's tough to eat so much in a day much less constantly plan a diet around so many meals.

I would continue to stay away/minimize the junk food though.. as said "You only get out of your body, what you put into it"

on a more serious note when your trying to gain muscle mass ideally how much cardio do you want to be doing? Should you do it every day, every other day, or maybe twice a week?
