    Official Dog Thread

I thought we could use a thread to discuss dogs. Owners, future owners, or to share dog stories, etc.

So, I am looking to get a new dog. I have had a German Sheppard, a Cocker Spaniel, a Siberian Husky, Malamute/Retriever mix, and Beagles.

I'm not sure what I want to get now though, as this will be my first dog that is "my own." Well, my girlfriends and mine. She really wants a Boston Terrier, but I have no experience with them at all. I want a dog that is easily trainable, that I can take to the park, and throw the ball around, and he won't go barking at everything in sight.

I also don't think I want a real big dog. But who knows. I'm looking to get one during the middle-end of summer.

Any advice would be cool. (And no Acid's sister jokes)

I'm looking to get a Jack Russell Terrier here in a couple years. Sure, it's awhile away, but the apartments I'm moving into this summer don't allow pets, so I can't exactly get him now. They're full of life, and very friendly, so it was a no-brainer for me.

#1 was my initial reaction, as well. One of my friends made the mistake, and has been fighting over the dog for AWHILE.

They are also yippers and runners... so be aware. Jacks and Beagles are both runners and will head for the hills at the first opportunity.

          Just a friendly warning.

Not all, of course, but it's common in the breeds.

Jack Russells are pretty cool. But they are so energetic. I remember my buddy had/has one. He would take it for a walk. Throw the ball around. And the dog would never get tired. He would run around the house. Dig up his yard.

Plus, they aren't really cool with other dogs/pets.

But they are damn cool if you have the energy.

Clay and Diesel, those are definitely all things I have considered.

I'm used to the whole yipper & high energy thing. I've had miniature schnauzers for as long as I can remember, and a toy fox terrier for awhile. All of these, of course, are family pets, but I guess they've gotten me used to dealing with little dogs like JR's.

you need to make sure where you get the GR from is a reputable place.. Our second dog was a Retriever, but it developed epilepsy at an early age (7 yrs old).. we only discovered (too late) that the reason for the problem was that the breed, since it is so popular, is inbred... that's where our dog got the disease from.

our next dog was an English Springer.. great, but sometimes whacky, dog..
lived to the ripe old age of 14 before bad arthritis set in...

Also, I'm assuming the whole beagle/runner thing is because of their hunting background... correct?

I have two Boston Terriers, one is 1 yr old the other is 5 months. They are a lot of fun, and are very smart when it comes to training them. The 1 yr old knows the whole array of tricks (sit, stay, down, speak, rollover, etc..) the other is still learning, he's kinda lazy. I've taken the older pup to two rounds of Petsmart training and the younger one just started his second round of classes. Just going to the classes obviously isn't enough if you want them training. The training classes are more for you to learn how to teach the dogs stuff.

The older one is very energetic, she'll play fetch until you wear out and she'll catch a frisbee. She's not perfect at frisbee because Bostons don't have much of a snout for catching them, but she works hard at it. Grown Bostons usually weigh in between 15-20 pounds if they have the correct diet. My 1 yr old is about 19 pounds and probably won't get much bigger. The pup is 11 pounds and probably will top out around 16 pounds.

I never had inside dogs before these two and I was nervous about it at first, but they do really well. I have a bell they ring to be let outside, so potty training was pretty easy if you have the time to spend with them. I never leave them out of their crates when no one is at home, just in case. The older dog probably would just sleep the whole time I was gone, but the pup would eat something probably, LOL. It's just easier crating them when I'm not home and it helps with potty training as well because they learn to hold it because they aren't going to pee in their crate if they can help it. When I'm home, we'll play fetch for a while, then they will chase each other around the house which is hilarious, and at night they cuddle up in the chair with us to watch TV.

Here's a vid of the 1 yr doing her tricks:

Wow, that was awesome. I just spent a lot of time watching other videos on the site.

How do they do in a park? Like, could you throw a Frisbee around with them there? Would they bark at other dogs? And what about grooming/shedding?

Also, how much did it all cost? For a purebred, all the shots, etc.
