I couldn't even imagine seeing that live... a co-worker of mine at my current job told me a lady he knew actually had one of the "jumpers" land a few feet away from her...

I know that day has changed me.. anytime I fly now, I look around at who my fellow passengers are..

I wasn't that close, but I could see them.

      ....I thank God I wasn't that close.

I tend not to remember this day, considering it sent my life into a downward spiral filled with anxiety, paranoia, and depression. I haven't been the same since, and I'm 3 hours away from New York.

It's a very sad day. The important thing is to be stronger and stand strong infront of all the global terror. Never give up. The US is the most amazing country in the world and there's no reason this should be changed. Never give up, people, never give up!

Re: Six Years Later - Never Forget

I'm not gonna retell where I was on that day. It's on here if you look for it. I was listening to the radio this morning tho and the host mused that this is our generation's "where were you when Kennedy was assasinated?" moment.

This is a day that will forever live in infamy IMO and it strikes a deeper chord then Pearl Harbor ever did. I have a friend from Texas and she made lapel pins for herself and co-workers to wear today. She also showed me a pic of one of the firefighters with his face in his hands with two angels over him. It's a very poignant picture.

Anyways, I don't care if it was Al-Qaieda or an inside job we must never forget those who we lost on that day.

Re: Six Years Later - Never Forget

I can't believe it has already been six years. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was in high school when it happened. I heard about it in between classes and didn't believe what people were saying. When I got to my second hour class my teacher had the TV on and I watched as it unfolded. Every class I went to that day had the TV on. Our teachers didn't really care if we did any school work that day. My high school baseball coach also cancelled fall practice that day and told everyone to go home and be with their families.

Has anyone been to ground zero? I was there a few months ago and there were still some windowns blown out from a nearby building.

I've been there twice. The first time was a couple years ago and you could still smell the smoldering wreckage and see the devastation as the area hadn't been totally cleaned up yet. I then was there a couple months ago and the area looks a little nicer. I notice they're doing Ground Zero tours but I didn't get a chance to go and take it.

Re: Six Years Later - Never Forget

On September 11, 2001, I can still remember vividly the scene. I was in my American History class in 8th grade with my best friend Dave. We had a project to present over a timeline of important events in history during our lives. For the early 90s we had the attack on the WTC. At that moment, a good friend of our teacher's comes bursting into the room telling him to put on the tv. We then watched for 2 minutes what was going on, one of the towers was burning but we didn't know why. The period ended so we all walked around going to our next class (for me, band). We got to band and everybody was talking to eachother, nobody even tried to play music when our teacher tried to get us to. We had heard the second tower was hit. Sometime in the next 20 minutes our teacher got us ready to play some music, but then somebody came in from the hallway or bathroom or something and then the rumor started circulating about other things being hit (which weren't true). Then later in the day we find out the Pentagon was hit. Then somebody says there is a plane heading towards the White House. The school wasn't as much afraid as just in shock. The school system handled it HORRIBLY by refusing to allow teachers to show us anything involving 9/11 or refusing to talk about it at all for the rest of the year. My American History teacher decided that was doing no good and could tell things were just getting confusing for us.

To be honest, I don't think any one of us in that school understood what changed. We didn't really understand the scope. Yes the world changed, but for Sylvania Ohio, not much changed besides more American flags. You heard a story here or there about somebody knowing somebody that was there or something. It really hit me though in July a couple years back. I was in Great Britain during the 7/7 bombings. I arrived in London just days after. I was sitting in a cafe with my mother eating pizza, when a heavily armored and armed man came in telling us all to get into the back and take shelter and for nobody to leave. They were clearing the streets, one man came into the building and waited it out with us. He told us they thought there was a bomb somewhere in a 2 building vicinity. It turned out to be a hoax, but we waited for 3 hours. It struck me then what 9/11 was really like in some ways. I can never claim to understand what it was like to be there or involved, but I feel like I came closer to it.

The older I get, the more I feel like I understand what really happened in so many ways.

Never forget, and never give up.

Really? wow, I'd like to have taken the tour then. Not because of historical reasons alone but to hear about the loved ones that they've lost. I'm sure the tours are emotional to some extent no matter how many times one has given said tour.

9/11 was one of the big reasons I went to college in NYC. It was the best decision I ever made. I was a quick walk from Ground Zero at all times. I was born and spent the first five years of my life in Queens, so it all came full circle in some ways.

Like Matrix said, the best thing to come out of this tragedy is a realization of the need to stay united at home. Those that try to create divisions based on race, religion, politics are failing us all.

My anecdote won't matter that much but let me say that 9/11 changed my life forever because I'm Muslim- there's no ifs, ands, or buts about that. However, not ONCE did I ever fear for my safety. I had faith in the spirit of the American republic. Sure, there are a few bad apples but that type of hate is inevitable in any country. That's what makes this country so damn great. I wouldn't imagine living anywhere else even when stories of hate came out.

9/11 was a great challenge for this nation but a test from which we emerged stronger than ever!

I went there about a year and a half after it happened.

Since I had never been to NYC before, I really know just how tall they were, but there was a building across the street, and they said to double (maybe it was triple, I don't really remember it that well), and that would be the size of the smaller tower.

I was there a couple weeks after 9/11. My wife and I had tickets to a play in NYC and we decided to walk as near to Ground Zero as we could to survey the scene. I remember a lot of things - all the dust covered buildings for blocks away from the towers, the jagged spires of the wreckage rising up in the distance far beyond the police blockades, but the thing I remember most is walking down a street and seeing wall upon wall full of sheets of paper, posted by people looking for their loved ones. Pictures of smiling faces, vital statistics, where they worked, what they were wearing, all surrounded by candles and keepsakes and handwritten notes that people had posted along with their messages. Rows and rows and rows, posted by people who just refused to believe that their loved ones were now buried beneath the rubble just a block away. I think about all those pages a lot.

I was in college that day it happened at Auburn. I had two exams that day that were not cancelled, and I couldn't really give a crap about either of them.
