maybe in europe or something. America lacks serious public transportation in almost every city. I've had to drive 45 minutes to my job before, and know people that have even longer drives.

Not buying gas is unrealistic. Even if you managed to not use a car to get to work, you'll still probably feel it if you buy gas to heat your home in the winter. If you somehow managed to miss both of those, electricity bills will cost more as a result of higher price of oil.

You should move to Canada. We have great public transportation system

More importantly, how much MPG does your car get? Mine is pretty crappy. I get 18MPG city. Highway is 23 I think, not positive on that.

I think my car gets around 20 MPG city and 30-ish MPG highway.

Its $3.15 over here, how did it get up to $3.60 in the Schaumburg area? Is that Premium?

Disagree. Southern California and San Diego in particular has next to no public transportation. Gas is a neccesity here just as electricity is for your home.

I personally have negotioated terms to work at home, and my wife took a job with in a few miles from here so we have mitigated it as best we can.

But you also have to factor in rising fuel costs affects everything from shipping costs which affects consumer products across the board, to airline tickets if you have to travel.

There obviously has to be a point at which you won't buy, and so far it hasn't been reached. To me it just seems ridiculous when I hear some people bitch and moan about it's way to expensive and not fair as if someone else is putting the gas into their vehicle for them. It's very true though that consumer products are affected by increased factor prices, shipping, etc.

This is one of the few times I miss living in NY... Gas was pretty expensive, but I didn't drive all the time like I do here. I could fill up my tank in NY, and because of the fact that we didn't drive around much during the week, the gas would last about 2 weeks. It was basically drive my son to the babysitter (5-6 city blocks), leave the car there, walk to the train and go to work. Then come home, get my son, hop in the car, go home... Even on the weekend, we didn't use it much.

Couldn't agree more. When I went out to San Diego, if you didn't have a car, you really couldn't go anywhere.

About $3.30 here in the Chicagoland area. Chicago, for some reason or another, has the highest gas prices in the nation.
