None of the points/arguments brought up siding with keeping the names has convinced me whatsoever. I'm pretty much neutral on the subject, but reading these points made by the "who cares/keep the names" side has basically swayed me to the other side.

Re: Native American Mascots/Names
I think its different if someone only calls YOU a derogatory word rather than an entire people. Sports are one of the most integral cogs of our society and to see it perpetuate stereotypes like these...I could definately see where people could get defensive.Comment

Pretty much the same with me.Comment

Re: Native American Mascots/Names
Isn't calling ME the derogatory term, being a member of a type of people, the same as calling everyone that? Just because they don't have a public channel to speak doesn't mean they would only be hurting me. They would obviously have to feel a certain way about my people to say something like that to me.Comment

So are you okay with a nickname like "Redskin?" Whats the difference between Redskin and Negro?
I realize that there are far bigger issues than just a mascot, but when an entire societal function like sport turns a blind eye to something so racially motivated, it presents itself as an even bigger problem.Last edited by WazzuRC; 10-09-2007, 12:57 AM.Comment

Why is there no outrage about a professional sports league referred to as "The Negro Leagues"? That's even worse than "Washington Redskins".Comment

Re: Native American Mascots/Names
It's a derogatory term, yes. But there are other, more important issues to worry about in our life. It's a sports team's nickname.

The Negro Leagues had no outrage because it was a completely different time period. Everything was so racially segregated. Times have changed.
I really don't see a difference between "Redskin" and "Negro." I almost think that "Redskin" is a worse term to use.Comment

Re: Native American Mascots/Names
The franchise was named the Redskins in 1933.
The last known Negro League played it's last game in 1958.
So if the Negro Leagues don't have outrage because it was a completely different time period, then what's different about the Redskins who were named as such 25 years BEFORE the last game of the Negro Leagues?Comment

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Negro Leagues were played by predominately African American players, who seemed to have no objection in calling the league as such. Native Americans are even more of a minority of African Americans, and I think they haven't had their voices heard nearly as well as they would like. I think the reason things have happened so quickly throughout the last 20 years and not before then is because the media's role in broadcasting and writing about these protests, opinions, etc.Comment

It's a big deal because people make it a big deal. This is so damn petty and can't stand this PC world.Comment
