As someone who has handled money transactions, I would also add when someone's bill is $26 and they give you $51. Or it's $38 and they give you $103.

It's not really annoying, but if you are on limited sleep it can feel like you are being asked to do long division.

I'll be honest, I thought that whenever I did that I was making it easier for them, like because they just punch in the number and it tells you what to give them back.

Then again, I also thought I was the only person who did that.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

We were all set to get new hardwood today in our living room and kitchen.

Got the wood through Home Depot after several quotes and good reviews from HD who contracts out the actual work.

My wife took the day off so she could be here to let them in and then was going to go be with her mother who had hip surgery this morning.

I took a half day so I could be home when they left and I had another function to be at this evening before having to pick the dogs up by 6:30 at day care.

We worked all weekend to move basically all of our furniture upstairs (they charge to move furniture). We only left the couch because we understand that all they would do with all of our furniture is move it to the side of the room they weren't working on. We decided we would pay for the couch because we didn't really have anywhere to put it but we would move everything else. Nothing super heavy, just more than a pain in the *** than anything.

Today comes, I went to work and shortly after getting there around 8, my wife texted me to let me know they were already there. Great! They told us sometime between 9-1.

Second GREAT! They told us they would be able to finish in one day after telling us two days.

Around 12:30 when I'm getting to wrap up and leave work, wife calls. The wood is defective and won't lock properly to the degree that it wouldn't be waterproof which is what we are paying for (dogs).

Apparently, the contractor tells wife that they consistently have problems with this particular product sold by Home Depot.

None of that is actually the gear grinder for me though. **** happens, no biggie, we can move on. After a call with HD and the contractor (at the same time) everyone agreed to rip up the floor which was almost 100% done, return it and pick a new floor. I don't even mind paying the difference for a new floor if that's what it comes to.

But now, to the gear grinder.

They ripped up the carpet. That's okay, we needed it gone which is why we're doing this in the first place. They sanded it so it's not too bad. Not ideal but we'll live. Went out tonight to get some rugs for the dogs to lay on if they need to because there are some spots that look like there could be some splinters sticking out.

But here's what makes me mad. I'm not a big penny pincher, but they were going to charge us something like $500 to deliver the product so instead we decided to just pick it up ourselves. It's a 20 minute round trip and it fit in my car in one trip so why not.

Now, because of the issue with the floor that was pulled back up, we not only have to load it back in the truck to take it back, we then have to wait for our new floor to be available and then pick it up and brink it here before installation.

And it has to be sitting out for 72 hours prior to installation so it settles with the humidity. We'll probably ask them to deliver for free but with the urgency of getting it done, if they push back we will probably just say F it.

Annoying but it is what it is.

*Edit: To clarify, it's not true hardwood, it's the synthetic waterproof locking floors.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

Definitely frustrating. I'm working from home today because we're putting in gas lines to run to our kitchen and fireplace. By the time the wife gets home this evening we should have a function gas insert and can start gas-stove shopping. Knock on wood.

It sounds like you handled it maturely, though. There would have been a good number of people screaming to the high heavens to "make it right ASAP." Still, you would think Home Depot would have said something about the trouble with the flooring being waterproof. I find it hard to believe they would have known about those issues.

There's definately questions I have that I would have asked if I was here and there is something not at all adding up. I think one of the biggest problems is that even though we bought everything through Home Depot, they aren't the ones that does any of the work.

They basically take our money and move on.

But I try and not dwell on things I can't control and just want it done the right way.

It's all loaded and ready to go back tonight so I am fully expecting a different conversation at HD tonight and I expect pushback on why they stopped installing the floor.

After they had put in four hours of work though, I'm very confident there was a valid reason.

I'm glad you posted an update. I saw your mention of this as it happened on Twitter but didn't see any follow up. I was actually about to tweet you the other day to ask how it ended.

I know that feeling of rushing home not knowing what you are going home to and it's the worst.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I hereby retract my gear grinder statement about this process with Home Depot. It was one of the best experiences we ever had.

I still had to take the defective floor back and bring the new floor back home tonight (which we weren't expecting to do to be able to do to be honest).

We went in, didn't ask for anything at first other than to return the floor and pick our new floor out.

They immediately helped me unload the old product and ultimately, helped load the new one later.

We got out of there with a far superior floor and they didn't try and charge us anymore than what we had already paid (we would have actually paid for a better product if it was warranted).

Our new floor costs about $20 more per box than the floor we bought (28 boxes). They also gave us a $300 credit for reasons not explained to us.

I may be jinxing things, but it almost seems like it worked out for the better for us.

Also, while the in store reps wouldn't (probably can't) come out and say it, it was pretty obvious that the previous flooring we got is not good. They basically acknowledged that they stopped selling it for the most part (we finalized or order over the phone rather than in store) and when I pointed out that I noticed there was a lot of the product we had returned sitting on the shelves taped up from other returns, they basically looked like they wanted to react but couldn't lol.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

Glad you got taken care of, kehlis. They must have had a lot of problems to take care of you like that without any questions or raised voices. The important thing is that they fixed everything to your satisfaction.

So, we contracted out to have our gas lines extended and run to our fireplace and stove. Simple enough. Originally the guy was going to be at the house Tuesday morning between 9-10AM. Cool. Monday morning they call to confirm appointment and work and tell us he'll be closer to 10AM. Fine.

He calls around 10:30 to say he's running late (obviously) and will be there around 11:30AM. Ok. He shows up a little bit after that and runs the line. We pulled a permit for the work because I'm a stickler like that and it's ****ing gas. I call the city and leave a message. Eventually they call back at end of day and setup an appointment for this morning at 9:30AM.

As soon as he looked at the line in the fireplace he just kind of looked at me and looked at the gauge again and is like, "well, it's sitting on zero here. No pressure." I just kind of shrug because what else can I say or do? He looks at the rest of the line to make sure nothing else is messed up, but unfortunately it was.

We had already bought a ventless gas log set to put in the fireplace. Apparently the line they ran was not sufficient for the maximum BTU's for the log set - much less any stove for the kitchen. So now they get to come back and install new line.

The kicker, though, is the fireplace itself isn't to code for the gas log set. Per the manufacturer's specs the area of "non-combustible material" is ten inches. The area of tile above our opening is only 7 inches. We would rather not vent through our chimney so we're going to be tiling this weekend.

                              Huzzah.

When you order chips and queso and they bring you like 15 chips then charge for re-fills.

Thought of something else. I ordered queso at a burrito shop on time. They gave me a thing of grated cheese............. This was in Portland, OR so I get it, but you are a burrito shop.
