I do not hate him at all. I mean, The Phantom Menace was not exactly what I expected, the trailer for the movie suggested something much, much better, but I took him in stride as simply a part of a huge universe that produced it's fair share of weird creatures, not only in the movies, but in books as well.

But, he was weird, you can't deny that.

Jar Jar Binks sucks. His talk, his walk (literally), his design/dated CGI, and his overuse. I think they tried to make him funny, and he just wasn't. I'm glad they dialed him back by Revenge of the Sith. Maybe it's a reason I actually liked that movie.

I'm not so sure I would say movies are dying, but you could make the argument that the actual movie theater experience is in jeopardy with straight to digital becoming the norm and big time releases still being held back.

Regal Cinema shut down 536 movie theaters due to not being able to survive this past year. They are a privately owned company though compared to AMC theaters. We still have a few of those but AMC as a company has been damn near in the grave a few times.

Roughly 40,000 Regal employees in the U.S. now face a work furlough. The company opted to shut down operations after the James Bond franchise's No Time to Die was shelved until 2021.

I like straight to digital because I have a nice projector now and can watch things at home in 135" but I hope movie theaters make a come back.

Honestly, movies come out digitally something like 3 months after their theatrical release, I have no problem waiting for that and paying like $3 instead of $12+ per person. I think the movies are most worth it as a place to hang / go as a kid or teen growing up. It’s the ultimate fallback plan. So there’s still usefulness, just not so much for my lifestyle now.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I've never been much of a movie theater person.

If anything I hate watching movies in theaters because of the unadjuatable volume. You know EVERY movie (not talking scary ones, just any movie in general) has the moment when the volume goes so low and the SUDDENLY IT JUST ENDS UP AT MAX VOLUME TO MAKE YOU JUMP.

And of course paying like $12 per person, and then that much on food as well. All to sit in a theater with dozens of other people, listening to strangers randomly laughing or talking throughout the movie.

Having "movie night" at home, with home made popcorn, drinks and whatever else, while you control the remote and can pause for a minute or two if you need to go to the bathroom or get more food, that's something I like way more.

I'm gear-grinded with any time I watch a movie with, say, my mom is that I can't help but notice she's scrolling through her social media on her phone as it's going on. And it's not that she's bored or uninvested, especially when it's a movie that she picked herself and was looking forward to watching. It's that it's there and there's no one telling her she can't use it.

Theaters don't "allow" for this distraction (I air-quote it because people will still do it, but my mom won't), and I like that when you pay that money for that one-time shot of seeing something, without any rewinds or opportunities to do anything else, you'll engage in that film more. That is a part of the theatrical experience for me.

I am torn down the middle. I enjoy movies at home for the reasons Maj stated but I also like the experience of going out even though it grinds my gears just how loud it is, the disrespectfulness of others, and the ridiculous prices for a ticket and concessions.

I think the theatre experience mostly conjures up the nostalgia of "back-in-the-day", especially if you're an old fart like me that had to rent a vcr to watch movies at home. Going to the theatre was an event.

Before covid, I really only did matinee movies by myself, or a date night movie with my wife.

I love the theater experience and can't wait to go back

I get that theaters have a better viewing experience ie sound and screen, but I enjoy having my good headphones on and just laying in bed watching a good movie via streaming on the TV. Did it recently with Bladerunner 2049.

Although most of the time I don't need to see something the weekend it comes out and am fine with discovering or watching movies months to years later.

People and their smartphones ruined movies at the theater for me so good riddance. Just do simultaneous release theater/streaming and let people choose.

That's not good business for studios, unless you want <$100M movies made all the time.

The exception, of course, would be if they get stupid upfront cash from these premium subscription services, like Netflix just did for the future Knives Out sequels. But then theaters lose out.

The best way is to let home viewers lose out for a short period of time, like we've always done. Personally, I miss the days of movies releasing on home video 5-6 months after its theatrical release, and being on digital the same day as disc.

I'm not worrying about theaters losing out, I see them as a relic. It is like saying don't use Netflix because Blockbuster might go under.

Plus, while I understand forcefully arguing on your behalf, theaters chain owners have always sound entitled to me.

I don't ever plan on going back to the theaters and it has nothing to do with COVID. Every time I went to the theater, I was immediately reminded of why I had more-or-less stopped going. People talking, being on their phones, shoving the back of your seat, etc. etc. etc. The whole experience is sub-par and not worth the time/money. It also doesn't help that there is never anything I want to see in the theater anyway (I don't like comic book movies so I'm pretty much SOL).

Besides, my home movie setup is as good or better than anything in the theaters. And I can watch a movie without wearing pants, which you can't do in a theater (without a visit from the authorities...)!!!

This movie theater near me has too good of food for me to say I will never go back. Alamo Draft House in Winchester, Virginia has an amazing Asian Pizza. Plus, any movie theater that brings me my unlimited popcorn without me having to miss any of the movie is a winner.
