I don't like when people go out of their way to save a buck and/or make a big deal out of it. Life's too short. But, you gotta do what you feel is right for you I guess.

Yesterday I was driving on a two-lane road and they had one of those electronic construction signs showing people the right lane would have to merge. Of course there's always those *******s that keep in the lane that's closing, all the way to the end, thus slowing traffic down since the left lane has to let their selfish ***es in.

Now, apparently there are some people who say this is actually the proper thing to do because you're supposed to do this thing called "zipper merging" where everyone stays in both lanes all the way to the merge point and then people just seamlessly merge. But of course in practice, this never works. So the best approach is for everyone to just pay attention and get into the correct land a half mile back, then it would be fine.

Also, while I'm at it, the slowness of so many people to get going at a green light...if you're 8 cars back when the light turns green, you don't start moving until like 15 seconds later. Most people would be terrible race car drivers, lol. I mean, I don't drive fast or crazy or anything, but c'mon maigne.

And this is why I love working from home, BTW.

When I was a kid (before driving) I always wondered why not everyone stepped on the gas pedal right at green to save time. Would be nice in a perfect world, heh.

It kind of annoys me to see the lack of responsiveness in other drivers, though. Say a car is going 40 MPH while closely approaching a red light and begins to hit the brakes. If that light turns green meanwhile, for whatever bizarre reason, many drivers still stay on the brakes for 1-2 seconds longer before going off. Y u no let off?

Then I do this thing where, if I see a red light, I don't go that 40 MPH until I have to hit my brakes. Instead, I'll let off my gas significantly more and hope to time a green light, or just save on my gas and brakes. Somebody behind me always has the urge instead to zip past me, as if to say: "I have to rush to this red light. It's super important!" So they go 50 MPH to pass me, only to slam on the brakes afterward. Then I meet them at the light with my conservative pace, or continue my momentum to pass them if and when the light turns green.

I think for a lot of people driving is just a passive activity. Clearly they've got a lot going on inside that car with phones, dogs, kids, food, drugs, thinking about the meaning of life, talking to invisible people, etc. People not taking their foot off the brake when the light turns green is just exhibit #234 of that.

In theory once that light turns green you could have a long line cars move forward at the exact same time, like a long trailer. But what always happens is ... first car takes a second to notice, then goes, second car takes a second to notice, then goes, maybe you get lucky and the third car is paying attention and is right on the heels of car #2, etc etc.

I try avoiding the busiest of areas because of how chaotic driving in some of those areas can be, especially with construction.

However, there is one area in particular in the city (right near Rogers Centre) where the road splits into 2 sections, clearly marked, from far away.

The left section goes to the highway. The right section goes the same direction, except you're driving on a regular road.

I'd say at least half the cars going on the highway go into that right lane, speed up, go past a few cars, then quickly merge into the left lane.

Not only is it annoying, its dangerous. And you basically have to let people merge in because they just do it so aggressively, you might as well let those idiots get their way than wind up in an accident, even if you're 100% not at fault. I'm sure police and others know everyone does this, but nobody seems to care.

I've had cars think they're at Indy, doing 50/60 in a 40, swerving in and out of city traffic only to get caught at a red light just down the road. I get a laugh every time tbh.

When I was younger something similar happened to me, except it was just me walking home.

I went to buy stuff, both my hands are filled carrying it on my way home. On my way home one person had their dog on their front porch and I'm across the street from their house on the sidewalk, I'd say a good 50 feet away.

Suddenly their dog gets up, starts barking, then full sprints across their yard, across the street and charges right at me. It didn't attack or anything, I started quick walking away while not able to drop what I'm holding.

After all that, they're just shouting "dont worry, he doesn't bite", the owner just calls the dog back, the dog goes back and that was it.

That makes it ok..your dog just full sprints at me from 50 feet away, charges right at me, and you see no issue with it? They're lucky it didn't bite or else they'd definitely be in big trouble. And lucky I wasn't some rude person who actually might have gone off on the dog in self defense.

Sorry Jolly, zipper merge or bust. People slowing down trying to get over well before the closure adds to the delay exponentially...that's what backs everything up. You go 65, slow to the work zone speed when indicated, traffic slows further and you slot in the end. Simple!

But, to your point, it never happens. Just like slow asses in the left lane on the highway, early mergers, morons at four way stops, apoplectic road rage, etc. this country is doomed to have inefficient automotive travel (need I even mention the utter inability of Americans to adapt to the genius of roundabouts).

Funny we are talking about animals/pets in this context, because every time I see that commercial on TV of the dog destroying a big screen TV I always kind of laugh at the dude's reaction to it. It's such a PC world that he's not allowed to react any other way but to smile. Even if the punishment would just be "bad dog" or making it go outside, they pretty much couldn't do that because somebody out there would be mad. But that's just a silly ad.

Pet owners who let their animals just do whatever are pretty much the same as people who let their kids run amok, and are just totally cool with everyone else having to deal with it lol. I love animals, but you are basically trusting the owners that the pets are disciplined to not bite/attack/whatever. Which is unfair ro the animal and the other people involved when something goes bad.

This is it right here. The roads are 95% set up for successful traffic avoidance, but once you throw the human equation in all bets are off.

My gear grinder is there are some areas that it feels like the state transportation department wants to scrap bodies off the pavement. Unmarked lanes or half done construction work. I kid you not there was a section of I-95 that the left side of the left lane was just dirt and gravel. Ripping up roads and letting them sit in that condition for months. These drivers need all the help they can get in not colliding with each other, don’t turn the difficulty up for them.

I’m gonna come out and say I’m an early merger, at least when I understand the general traffic condition and flow after a few drives. Specifically Where I get on to the highway is an extremely short ramp where even gunning it you are only at 45-50 MPH by the end of the dashed merge lane markers. It is absolutely uncanny how generally clear traffic is there but there’s always one person, in the right lane. They see you struggling to get up to speed but damn if they don’t just sit in that right lane when getting over just for a second is the safe, courteous and frankly logical thing to do. I’ve taken to throwing my *** in to the lane and forcing them to adjust. Until you’re up in their face they just can’t be bothered to consider anything else on the road. Some folks may take this as a sign of aggression, others are like oh I see now, my bad.

Only other times I merge early is when the person in front of me thinks merging at 35-40 MPH is cool when it’s a 70 MPH highway. They’re putting my life in danger at that point, and I understand crossing the solid line is not correct and zooming out from behind them isn’t great, but at least I’m in somewhat control instead of being totally inhibited by their dangerously low speed. Excessively slow drivers are the most dangerous on the road, IMO. They clog up everything for everyone and lead to secondary decisions that aren’t great (like merging early). The only thing worse are the Need for Speedsters who weave in and out of lanes 1 foot from slamming in to other cars. If I identify them early, I’ll leave a little extra room. They’re gonna take whatever they can anyway, so at least I can try to make it safer for everyone involved a little bit.

Dub said it, people drive passively. They’re at point A and then they’re at point B with no thought to how or why. My mind is always trying to marry the safest, fastest, easiest way to get from A to B, and I’m processing info and making changes in real time. Every drive, even the same route, is different. I’ve avoided so many potential accidents by keeping my head on a swivel and I wish more people had such awareness of their surroundings.

Lastly, the best feeling... when you’re in a cluster of like-minded drivers. Passing in the left, getting back over to the right at a nice cruising speed. Turn signals. Getting off the line at lights. Getting over around merges so they have a clear path to get on. It’s just such a smooth process, so stress-free and enjoyable to not have to expect the unexpected.

I could talk about driving experiences all day. Lol
