When people support one team in college football but another team in college basketball.

"I am an Alabama football fan but a Duke basketball fan"

    This really grinds my gears.

My first name is James, middle name is Christopher. But I've gone by Chris my whole life. I even wear a uniform @ work with "Chris" on the patch for our names.

Still get called James. Ppl think I'm deaf or hard of hearing b/c I rarely answer them when they call me James.

Why though? No different than being, say, a San Francisco 49ers fan and an LA Lakers fan. You are a fan of the team; not a fan of the school, city, etc. What would grind my gears is if the person just hopped on those team's bandwagons.

For instance, I grew up in Memphis and always watched Tigers basketball, but I would not call myself a Tigers football fan. I watched Arkansas and Mississippi State more often than not because of my parents and where most of my friends went to college.

It is very different than that. You choose to root for a school in college athletics. In my opinion that means Football, Basketball, Baseball, and whatever else they do. Again this is opinion, but it grinds my gears to no end.

I could see if you physically went to that school, but if you have no ties to the school other than you watch this team or that team, I see it as no different than being fans of teams in a different city. People only cheer for the school because the school is the label. Just because you like the Tide football team doesn't mean you like Alabama sports in general, much like if I'm a Blue Jays fan, that doesn't mean I'm a Toronto sports fan. I hate when people say, "Oh, you are a Blue Jays fan, you must be a Raptors and Leafs fan." Same with, "Oh, you watch Bama football, so you must watch Bama basketball," so on and so forth.

I see what you mean, but doesn't seem like a serious offense to me. The fact said person might be a Bama and Duke fan, that's another story given recent history. Would it bother you if they were a Bama basketball and Duke football fan? Though I doubt any sane person would admit that.

Pro Sports and College Sports are not the same. I can't begin to have this debate with you if you are using one to justify the other.

The only way it would be equivalent is if the blue jays also played basketball and football.

Interesting point. I wonder how European clubs handle this. Do supporters of Barcelona root for all the teams, Soccer, Basketball, etc? Or just the soccer team?

I don't really follow college sports that much, so that doesn't bother me. That said, I "support" BC in all sports. I use that term loosely because I really don't follow them like I do my NHL, NFL, and MLB teams. Same thing goes for NBA.
                  NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
                  NFL - Buffalo Bills
                  MLB - Cincinnati Reds

                              Just snip that out please.
