Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
Fighting a losing battle there. They've been referred to as toons since at least the advent of the 3D PC MMOs in 1999.
I've seen people in my guild say the same thing and I don't understand it. What would you rather have them called? They only time someone uses toon as in "my toon" is when it's a character they created - anyone else put in the game is either referred to as an NPC or by character name if it's a game that has a set group of characters.
I've always thought someone getting bothered by the word toon is akin to someone getting bothered when someone calls a tree a tree. That's just what the word has meant, does mean and will continue to mean.
I just ask why out of personal curiosity because I've seen it said before but never has anyone been able to explain why it's said.badComment

It grinds my gears because it's ****ing stupid, and makes no sense. It also sounds childish. It's also not how the games themselves refer to those characters, they refer to them as, surprisingly enough, characters.Comment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
I beta tested Everquest, DaoC, Everquest 2, then I left when everyone migrated to WoW because I didn't care for it anymore. Not once did I see anyone reference a character as a toon until much more recently.

Same here.
Only time I've ever heard the word "toon" used is when referring to cartoon characters (And I don't mean in gaming), specifically when it was used in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.Last edited by Chaos81; 10-06-2013, 07:49 PM.Comment

Call them what they are.
Nobody knows exactly where the term originated so its not the same as "tree".
The word "tree" has origins in languages that are a thousand years old. Maybe in a thousand years I won't have a problem with the word toon.

I'd rather them be called character, paladin, thief, halfling, mage, high elf, gunner, captain, girl, guy, tree, etc.
