I've been to numerous fast food establishments, coffee shops, etc.

I've done this a million times. This is the first time someone questioned why I gave them 16 cents and didn't understand the concept of what I'm trying to do.

And you're right, it shouldn't have been a hassle.

He should have seen I gave him $5.16, enter it in the register, and give me my change. End of story.

He looks and goes "It's 41 cents"

I reply back, I know, I gave you $5.16, so I can get 3 quarters back.

"Yes, but it's 41 cents, you only gave me........ 16 cents."

I didn't say a word, as I was pretty amazed by the stupidity for just a bacon egg and cheese sandwich.

Finally, after realizing that I'm not saying another word, he punches it in the register.

The MACHINE automatically dispenses the change for him. All he has to do is grab it and give it to me.

Instead, he grabs an extra nickel, and says, "here's your change 80 cents."

What the hell did I just witness.

I worked a register in college and high school and no one ever did this to me for coins back, for a dollar bill I would understand. I read it twice and I still confused me. I mean I get it, but at the same time I don't get it. I could see why it threw him for a loop.

To each his own though. Stories like this make me glad I am not at the McDonalds working a drive through.

I know, I made it more confusing by giving in 16 cents. I'm sure if he was on OS, he'd complain about me. Honestly, I only intended to give him a penny, to avoid getting more pennies. When I looked in my change jar, I noticed I had 16 cents. I thought "Perfect! I could get rid of an extra nickel and dime, and get 3 quarters back."

I've been to this McD's before, so I know they have the automatic changer machine. So I really didn't think it would be a problem.

If I gave him 7 dimes, 8 nickels, 9 pennies, and expect him to know his math on the spot, then yes punish me. But you mean to tell me someone that is at least 16 years old can't count a penny, nickel, and dime in 15 seconds or less?

He's got a line of cars to deal with, boss expects him to keep it moving, and you show up in the drive through handing him 7 dimes, 8 nickles, and 9 pennies I hope he "drops" them all as you try to hand them to him.

So was he unable to count to 16 or did he just have a brain-fart and thought your total was $5.41?

Sounds like the latter from you original story.

Oh yeah for sure. But then there's the guy the other day that I actually see pull in right before me, and doesn't pull into the stall in front even though it was empty.

I had that happen at a station where there was no room to go by. I know he saw me because we made eye contact when he got out. So I back up. Went all the way back around and back into the open pump in front of him. He had to back up to get out.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

Grocery shopping today and I didn't want to fall victim to my own gear grinder so I was returning the shopping cart.

Well, an employee was out in the parking lot rounding up carts. He had just gotten the carts out of the cart return nearest my car and was going to another next aisle over.

I think... I will go give it to him. He looked over at me and watches me pass the closest one. He pauses as if waiting for me. He continues to fish the cart out of another cart return and starts walking away as I get closer to him.

I stopped in my tracks. I even said, hey and no response from him. I look back at my wife and she was laughing. So I ended up putting the cart in this cart return further away from my car. I refused to chase him around the parking lot and eventually have to return it to the carts in front of the store...

Per the words of Shug... What the hell did I just witness???
