Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

When sports writers use the term "video game numbers" when speaking of a good players particularly excellent stats. Something like "Clayton Kershaw has numbers that look like they're from a video game this season."

My gripe is... I still occasionally play sports video games and they're mostly nowhere near the cartoonish arcade style games of the past. The numbers in most sports video games these days are actually quite close to reality.

I dunno, I guess u can still skew a video game's difficulty to get astronomical stats but for the most part that silly line is a bit insulting to the games of today.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

Speaking of douche.....I remember when I was 7 years old, I heard this guy on a movie during the 1980s say the word douche to another guy that annoyed him. So one of my older sisters ate my candy that I had sitting on the tv. I called her a douche, my parents heard it and my mom back handed me in the mouth and said boy you can't repeat what people say on movies.

Then a few days or couple of weeks later this teacher gave us a surprise test. This kid in the back of the room called her a douche. Teacher took me to the principal office and I got a 1 day suspension for it. Lady said I sexual harassed her for calling her a feminine hygiene product, despite the fact I wasn't the kid who even said it in the first place.

That day I realized the justice system in the country isn't fair and I never looked at a teacher or a person of authority the same way again. The whole time I was thinking this teacher just blatantly lied on me and the principal didn't even try to listen to me what so ever....I was so mad. The teacher didn't even ask the class who did it, she just automatically singled me out..

How is douche/douchebag a trend when it's been used for decades?

Ya, frustrating at school when a teacher has it out for someone. Teachers supposed to be people that students can trust, but it's so obvious teachers have faves and people they don't like. One teacher I had got me in trouble cause I refused to go on a field trip cause 1.It cost too much money,2.It was so boring(it was some opera or something). They never liked me to begin with, and it was optional, but somehow I got in trouble for not wanting to go. It's fun when you're one of the teachers faves, but seems like being on a teachers bad side hurts you more than being on a teachers good side helps you.

You find out lots about teachers once the school year is over/you graduate. I've talked to a number of teachers after I graduated(me and my friends visited a few after we graduated) and getting to hear their fully honest opinions on stuff is real interesting. Wasn't them ripping on people or anything, but makes you respect them more when you get to hear them talk to you person to person about their job instead of just teacher to student. One of those things where it sucks that we found out these types of things AFTER graduating(which is obviously why teachers don't tell students some stuff until after they graduate)

I'm sure in 1968 people were throwing around the word douchebag at the same rate they are today.

                Or not.

Somehow it's a "bad word". Gets censored on TV and stuff too.

                      How old are you?

I asked my parents when they first heard the term as an insult and they said the 80s. They were born in 1950. So if it was being used commonly before I was born then it's no longer a "trend".

I feel like it became a popular word to use pretty recently. Don't remember hearing it at all growing up or in school.

The 1980s was the first time I heard it too. First on movies and tv shows, then a hell of a lot cops started calling suspects douchebags. I remember the name of the movie now, it was The Wraith that came out in 1986. The cop on the movie called these high school bad kids douche bags.
