Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I'm taking a class right now where the information taught in class is never actually tested on and the 10 online quizzes we have are 100% based on the book. The first day of class the prof said she doesn't take attendance after week two so I may have missed a day or two somewhere along the line...

Conspiracy theorists... Man, I swear this is the cool thing to do now. Of course people are dumb enough to believe what they read on the internet.

I hate "class participation" grades. I don't understand what beig quiet has to do with my understanding of the material. If I'm not a distraction, then why should my quiet personality matter. That **** bumped me down from an A to a B+. Ridiculous.

Maybe because it may be about more than being a quiet observer and it's trying to teach you to be an active participant every now and again.

You have only yourself to blame for having your grade drop there for that reason.

Class (or at least the good ones) isn't about the material.

Class participation and attendance were the 2 stupidest grades. Yes, sounds like easy grades, but still....Why do teachers care if people show up or not? Teachers got paid regardless, so who cares if people show up, just do your job and teach! It sucked too though, cause if you're sick, you know you missing class means losing 2% for each time you miss. So it basically forced people to go to class sick just to get that, and class took at least 30 mins longer just from people attempting to participate in discussions with the teacher to show that they're participating and deserve the marks that day.

I'll never forget it, the "What I learned in class today" speeches we had to give at end of class...Seriously? Teacher treating people like they're in grade 2 or something, it was pathetic/embarrassing having to do that(worst was when you went last, cause everyone already mentioned everything the teacher taught,so it was impossible to come up with original answer). And other times, the teacher flat out forgets if you attended or not and then you don't get the attendance or participation mark even though you were there and participated and everything.

Really, anything in general where you're marked based on an opinion of the person marking I find to be stupid. Just cause they don't believe you met the requirements, doesn't mean you didn't actually do it. I said it before in this thread, 2 of my friends submitted work(it was the exact same thing one borrowed from the other) to a teacher in different semesters(it was an elective class),one of them got an 80,another got a 60. The 60 wasn't cause the teacher remembered someone else giving those answers previously,it was just cause it was marking based on opinion/how the teacher felt when marking. 20%....really? So basically the opinion of a teacher can make the difference between someone being an A student, and almost failing?

Class participation I somewhat agree with being stupid, but I understand it at the same time. The thing that makes it stupid is that it teachers all grade it different and you never know how much to participate. I got a B+ in my COM class last quarter because my participation grade was only an 83.2. I missed one day and talked probably the 4th most in the class out of about 16 people. Girl next to me was one of the quietest ones, but she was the only person to make it every day. Ended up with a 4.0.

Attendance, however, isn't stupid to me. You know how much teachers have to plan for their classes? No one is going to do all that just to have no one show up.

In the future you'll be telling your kids hyperbole stories about how you had to break your own legs once just to get a day off.

The stupid part about class participation grades is that it (potentially) implies someone knows the course material more, or less than other students based on how often they speak in class. It lacks all sense.

Attendance grades vary to me. Giant lecture hall classes have no business having attendance grades, its always the newer professors that are hard asses about that. Tenured professors dont give a **** about nothing haha.

And I actually did **** up my leg multiple times in HS. I still couldn't miss class lol.

With no participation grades then there's no real discussion. And if the class is discussion based it's stupid when everyone just sits in silence. I've never gotten less than an A in participation grades.

Thats not always the case. Subject, professor/TA, time of the day, lots of factors go into that.

And Im not saying its a hard grade to get. I just think its dumb conceptually. Id be pissed if I got 100s on everything but get a A- because the teacher doesnt feel like I spoke up enough. Its conceptually dumb to me.
