Agreed, your privacy is your privacy.

But when you are being paid to be at a certain place for a certain amount of time, you give up that privacy.

If you were someone who paid contractors by the hour you would probably be more sympathetic to someone who was paying someone for 8 hours wanting to make sure they were actually working for 8 hours rather than 4.

I'm thinking what happened is somebody was abusing the system and was lying about where they were and got caught. So then he added the GPS tracking. I went to the website, there are different levels to the app. That is probably why he added the GPS tracking.

I understand why the company does it but I just disagree with being "tracked". I just don't think you should give up your rights just because you're getting paid. Of course the courts have made it clear what they think. I just disagree with it.

Amazon/my bank temporarily blocking my card.

I was buying comic books for my Kindle, and the last few didn't go through because there's an "issue with my payment method".

Ehh...the employer isn't paying the contractor to be at the job site; he's paying the contractor for the work being done.

I see it more so as a trust issue...is the contractor truly billing hours for time he isn't even actually getting the job done? The employer wants to ensure if JMD (example) bills 20 HRs, that he is on the job site for 20 HRs and not trying to get extra money because he was somewhere else. With that, I can understand JMD's annoyance if he's built a honest reputation of 35+ years.

If he had told me ahead of time that he was going to use the tracking, it probably wouldn't be a big deal. I'll most likely continue to do jobs for this guy, been painting for him for 5 years.

I'd also like to point out I work as a sub contractor. This means I take the job that he gets and I do it myself. None of his employees work with me. It's my responsibility to do the job start to finish. I use my equipment and I buy the paint , I bill him for my hours worked and the cost of materials.
Get a 2nd phone. Use the first one to be tracked, go to the job, set it down with the tracking on, leave and do whatever you want, come back at the endbof the day to retrieve your phone. Bam.

Out of curiosity...does location services need to remain on once you've clocked in? Just wondering if you could turn it on, clock in, and then turn it off. Repeat the process to clock out. That way, you've sacrificed maybe 2 minutes of privacy and the guy feels better knowing that you were where you should have been in that timeframe.

Seems like this could protect you as well since there would be no way for the guy to say that you were never at the job site. Verifying that you were where you said you were can work in favor of both parties if either one decides to dispute things.

I would think it has to remain on otherwise what's to say someone didn't turn it on, clock in, turn it off, then leave.

The girl in the office beside me is extremely loud with her ugh's (usually more like uuuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) and yawn's (normally a little more sing song-y than a loud normal yawn) throughout the day. It's annoying as hell.

We had moved on to a broader discussion. Obviously you aren't going to get away with not doing the job...

But go try to get construction and Public Works guys to all write down what project they were on and when throughout their day. On top of requiring them to log what materials they used on each. It's like herding cats.

No one's saying they're lazy, too stupid to write things down, cheating, or not doing their jobs. They just don't think about the importance of recording things. That's what's at issue here.

Being next to the kitchen is annoying, as well. The loud conversations, the smells.... I'm basically a full on office curmudgeon at this point.... Man, I wish I could work from home.
