I see that principles don't matter much to you.

Neither does the fact that I use these dollar bills as change for my students when they buy food items from me, because they often use the $1's in vending machines... machines that don't accept SBA's.

I only hold cash for two reasons: ARCO gas stations (they charge extra if you use a card) and change for students. I have no reason to carry cash otherwise, and coins don't exactly go in my wallet.

This might be a dumb question...

But why not just take the 2 coins, go to a nearby store and exchange them for 2 singles if coins don’t go in your wallet(pocket maybe?)

Of course I could do that. Eventually I will probably find myself doing so, or if I can find something to buy that is $2 even I will do just that, if I'm carrying them on me. Just doesn't seem necessary when he's right there. I mean I literally had just given him those dollar bills. It would be one thing if I never gave him any $1's, but it seemed kind of skimpy.

I'm good with my "principles" thank you very much.

When you are the one that overpaid in the first place and then complain about how you are getting your $2 back, you have no leg to stand on.

And like PPM said, it will be very easy for you two exchange those two coins for dollar bills elsewhere. It's still Sunday so you have plenty of time.

And last and most importantly, you may want to report the store for doing something illegal as California law is pretty clear that it is illegal to charge for using the card:

Indeed, California law, according to the Visa website, dictates:

“No retailer…may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means…”

Statute: Cal. Civ. Code § 1748.1(a) (West)

Discounts for Cash Payments are allowed in California

“A retailer may, however, offer discounts for the purpose of inducing payment by cash, check or other means not involving the use of a credit card, provided that the discount is offered to all prospective buyers.”

Statute: Cal. Civ. Code § 1748.1(a) (West)

          Statutes cover: Credit Cards only

Statute: (Cal. Civ. Code § 1747.02(a) (West) (defining “credit card”))
One morning, not too long ago, I stopped at the Arco down my street to get gas before heading to work. As I swiped my Visa debit card at the pump, a message prompted me to approve the required $0.35 charge for using a card. Like I have a choice. Hitting the green "yes" button, I accepted the charge to my bank account and filled up. Fast forward a couple of hours, and it was breakfast time. I walked over to the small cafeteria next to my office, which serves as the one and only spot to grab food or coffee without leaving the building. Ugh, no cash! The woman who owns the business requires a minimum $5 purchase to pay with a card, so I grabbed a drink I didn't really need to meet the minimum and swipe my debit card once again. I probably spent an extra $1 that day for the ability to charge my debit card -- not a lot, but I'm subjected to similar fees and minimums on an almost daily basis. Then I found out I have been illegally charged those fees all along. While...

Also, in the future, if you are going to question my "principles" you will be better off to not follow that by explaining to me why you need the bills over the coins which makes it a necessity, not a principle.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I don't know if it's credit card, but I do know that it's true for debit card. Don't know if that makes a difference. When you pay with debit at the pump it says "0.35 additional fee. Accept? Y/N" or something like that. All ARCO stations do that. I'll have to see about the legalities of it, but they are cheapest otherwise (except Costco sometimes).

Anyway, ironically I was actually going to pay them exactly $28, but I knew I didn't want to not fill up all the way because gas prices are going to hike up here on November 1st (and where I was the gas was even cheaper than where I live), so I wanted to make sure to fill up in time and overpaid just in case. I may be visiting a gas station between then and now, but I had no intent of leaving the house today, and tomorrow I'm always going to be traveling with company. Unsure about Halloween.

EDIT: Here is what their site says about the fee: https://www.arco.com/faqs/

Why is there a 35 cent convenience fee for the user of PIN debit cards?

There are costs involved with accepting and processing payment cards. There is a 35-cent processing fee for debit cards only, in addition to any fees your bank may charge for this service. For all other transactions there are no additional fees. This allows our consumers the flexibility of using a debit card while still providing value that our consumers expect.

*This 35 cent convenience fee is the amount ARCO® and ampm® charge for debit transactions. The amount of this convenience fee may change from time to time without prior notification.

Apparently debit cards only. I know this also happened inside when paying for oil once, and I was upset at myself for first paying at the pump then getting oil, paying an additional $0.70 in two separate transactions. Whoops.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I would still check on that, there is a TON of grey area but generally it's illegal for any sort of a company to pass on their processing fees by masking it as a convenience fee. (Don't let them fool you on the difference between credit or debit BUT the debit side is markedly more expensive than credit for whatever reason).

Most companies are smarter and just mark up their prices to cover the processing fees but with gas that's more difficult to do.

Being as they're so rare (I've never gotten a SBA dollar coin as change), I wonder if stores would accept them or if it'd be like $2 bills (another rare currency) and some cashiers won't take them as happened the last time I tried to use a $2 bill that I'd gotten in a bday or holiday card from a relative. I ended up just taking the $2 bill to the bank and exchanging it for 2 1s.

I think you're supposed to keep them and eventually they'll be worth more money. That's what I've done when I've gotten rare or uncommon currency.

Yeah, I have a $2 bill in my wallet that my student gave me to buy some consumables. Don't really know what I want to do with it right now.

As far as SBA's, I'd say they aren't as rare though as, say, silver dollars. I've had plenty of those and Sacagawea coins where I just hope to rid myself of them whenever I can.

Going to bed having won your fantasy football game by 1 point, waking up to having the score changed so that you lost by 2.

I got screwed on a waiver claim because of a technicality earlier this week. Ended up getting a player who performed better anyway yesterday, so I would’ve lost if everything had worked how I wanted it to in the first place. Just a karmic correction.
