Re: "We"
The thing is too, in todays professional sports climate, the players don't really give a crap about the city they play in. They're in and out in a few seasons. They don't live here in the off season, etc. They might want their team to win, but it doens't really matter WHICH team.
I was here cheering for the team before the player got here, I'll be here when he's LONG gone.PSN: JISTIC_OS

Re: "We"
That's utter horsesh*t. I have lived and breathed the Edmonton Oilers since 1982 -- longer than many of you have been alive. I watch EVERY game on NHL Center Ice, have Oilers' memorabilia all over my basement, blew off my sister's college graduation party to watch the Oilers win the Cup, etc., etc.
Yet I never say "we" or "us" regarding the Oilers. I'm not a member of the team or the organization. I'm a hardcore fan. There's a big difference.
"We" and "us" are members of my family, not a sports team, no matter how much I inhale and exhale them.
Take care,

Re: "We"
I don't care, even if it does make you sound like you're living vicariously through those athletes. But I do care when people say that those who don't say "we" or "I" aren't hardcore fans, because nothing is further from the truth.

Re: "We"
I'll agree with this. You went to the school, after all.I think you have to use "we" and "us" if its your alma mater. I might not have lost any blood or tears of the field of competition at WVU, but I have poured my heart and soul (and liver) into cheering on my Mountaineers every week and I have put in work in the classroom and libraries on campus to deserve to be part of the collective that is the Mountaineers.
Parts of my liver and lungs still are floating around Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 20+ years after I left them there.

That is where you are wrong, once you do all that stupid stuff you did for your team, you become a "we"That's utter horsesh*t. I still say it is money. I have spent a lot of money on my teams, therefore it is "we"

Scott:
I know you're a Van Halen freak and probably have spent a TON of money on VH albums, tickets and souvenirs. Do you say "we" in regards to VH? When you left a great VH show, did you ever say, "Damn, WE rocked tonight!"
If not, what's the difference between worshipping a sports team and worshipping a band, especially if you have as much sweat and wallet equity in both and have followed both for a long time?

Agree, but sports are different. I don't know why, but they are. But good point though.

Re: "We"
Money should have nothing to do with it. My father-in-law is a retired dairy farmer who worships Syracuse basketball. He attends maybe one or two games per year because he lives two hours from Syracuse and has a limited income because he's retired. He has spent a few bucks on an SU hat and an SU T-shirt and sweatshirt.
Yet he might be the most rabid SU fan I know, more hardcore than people I know who have season tickets and are decked out in new SU Nike wear every other season.
I live 3,000 miles from Edmonton and never have been to an Oilers' home game. I haven't bought an Oilers' jersey since I got a #99 jersey in 1984 -- does that make me less of a fan than someone who lives in town, has season tickets and bought the new Reebok Edge jersey this year? I think not, especially since I spend a good 30 minutes every morning over coffee scouring the Web and blogs for Oilers' news and scuttlebutt before I move on to other hockey news. I know that team inside-out and follow every move they make.
Would you love the Sharks any less if you didn't spend coin on them? That's too bad if the answer is yes. I didn't think loyalty was based on the digits on a cash register display.
Take care,

Re: "We"
Nope, but if I did love the Sharks I should throw some money their way. Therefore I call them "we" It is what is. I call all my sports teams like that. The Vikings, Sharks and SF Giants, well the Giants I call them they.Money should have nothing to do with it. My father-in-law is a retired dairy farmer who worships Syracuse basketball. The bottom line is when you put your life into a team, you should call them we.

Re: "We"
I will agree with this, just because I use "we "and "I" , doesn't mean that I look down upon those who don't. I also don't believe that it means I am living "vicariously" through those athletes at all, In most case's at least
Case in point" My company just did a signing with Jake Peavy, and the Padre fans found out I was a Cub fan, they asked me questions about Prior maybe being traded or leaving as a free agent and signing with them......when they asked about him and this scenario, they used the term " you guys" alot. They weren't nerds, who live through anything vicariously...they just new that I was die hard Cubs fan, and very well informed about the team...and that was the term they chose.Twitch - bluengold34_osComment

I'll agree to disagree. Sister Sledge sang it best: "We are family." I live for the Oil, but they're not my family.Nope, but if I did love the Sharks I should throw some money their way. See how stupid it would have read if I wrote, "I live for the Oil, but we're not my family?"

Re: "We"
I think it comes down to how you see we. I don't see we just as family. I see it as a term I used to show what something means to me. If I say we it means I am apart of it. When you spend as much time as I do on my sports team, they become more than a team. They become a part of my life. Now that is the sad part. I am much better now. I can take my teams losing and not get mad, but when I was younger I used to get real piss and break things. lolComment
