"We gotta get Mikey some hole to run through, we gotta make sure Hart goes out on top..."

I just don't get it. Of course it probably makes it tougher to say "We" when you're a Spartan fan. I always find myself saying, "What the F*** are THEY doing?"
You do realize that some people grew up rooting for the team their father loved, ie Michigan...you don't have to go to a school to root for one...

That's one thing that makes me glad I'm not in the state of Michigan anymore...whenever I'd talk to a State fan they would immediately ask me if I actually went to Michigan. Then they shut the f*** up when I say yes. Just annoying as hell when Michigan St. fan just whines that some of Michigan's fans didn't attend the school...Is that all you can grab onto? Let it go and root for your own team.

I also hate Michigan fans that rip on Michigan State as a school...both sides have stupid stuff like that and I wish it'd stop....

My dad went to State and he somehow isn't a prick who thinks you have to be an alum to root for them. Then again, he's also about ready to give up on State because of how they're playing...I get a call after the Michigan/Mich. St game and he just sighs and goes "Another fing time we grab defeat out of the jaws of victory", so maybe he's just not passionate enough.

Its hard to explain, I don't care who people root for, I think its good to have passion. Its good to feel good when your favorite team pulls out a last second victory. Its ok to feel bad when your favorite team loses. I guess I just don't get why some people get all righteous because they are a fan of the school.

When a Walmartvine says we beat your sorry a$$es again. You'll always be little brother, yada, yada, yada, it gets old. Now if Mgoblue says it, I'm fine with it. You went there.

I'm not even debating the fact that State will never get the same amount of talent as Michigan on the football field. I'm not debating that winning a B10 title at State is about as likely as spotting Bigfoot in your backyard

. I just get sick of the yokles that run around puffing their chest out because they are a fan? Cheer and be happy when your team wins if you are a a fan, but when you taunt and make comments on behalf of a school you couldn't even get into if your life depended on it, then I just have to question "why?". I guess it makes them feel better about themselves. And people always say Spartans have an inferiority complex?

It's emotional attachment that makes sports what they are. We care so much about the teams we root for, i don't see why people get all hissy if people use "we" or "us"...

Also, the "12th Man" concept refers to the crowd, and the crowd noise can affect games (Autzen being a really tough place to go and play, etc.)
I agree. I think its fine too. I don't normally use "we" but if I do or someone else does I don't care. Besides, sports wouldn't exist without the financial support of the fans.

          Re: "We"

I guess after being part of an actual baseball team for most of my life, whether it was high school, little league or college, it just doesn't feel right for me to use "we" on a team that I am not actually on.

I understand why people do it and for some reason it used to really bother me, but it really doesn't any more. As others have stated, some people live and die with their team and feel that they are apart of it as a fan.

I still won't use it as it doesn't feel right to me, but it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

**I think it really bothered me because I knew a dude that was completely unathletic and knew nothing about sports. In the middle of High School, he started paying attention to sports and listening to talk radio and all of a sudden he's a die-hard Giants fan and everytime he would speak of the Giants, it was always, "We gotta make this trade" or "Our pitching is killing us", etc. For some reason, it used to eat at me, because a) he was a bandwagon fan and b) he knew nothing other than what he heard some nobody say on sports talk radio.

            Agreed.

I don't have as much of a problem rooting for pro teams from another state because not every state has a pro team. College is a little different though.

I'm an OU fan because I went to school there and grew up here. I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan because it is relatively close to home and I feel like I am in Dallas all the time. I've always liked the St. Louis Cardinals and have family in St. Louis. I don't really have an NBA team but will be a Sonics fan when they move to OKC.

I have been to numerous Cardinals games, a ton of OU games, and a few Dallas Cowboys games. I have some tie-ins to all of my favorite teams. If someone were to ask me what team I am most passionate for it would be OU for obvious reasons.

You never see someone that lives in L.A. or New York be a Baylor, Vanderbilt, Iowa State fan, etc.

It's being a bandwagon fan when you root for a team clear across the country when you have never been to the state or seen the team play in person. I'm not saying you can't like that team but it is what it is.

A true fan is a fan that is with their team when they suck.

I swear, when Florida State was good I saw a lot of people sporting Florida State gear. Now I don't see any. When Miami was good I saw many people sporting Miami gear. Now I don't see any. Lately, I have seen a lot of Colts and USC stuff.

Disagree with this completely, especially now in the ESPN era. You are exposed to college teams from all over the country night after night now due to ESPN and other sports networks. You can develop a strong affection for that team just by watching them.

Notre Dame football is a perfect example. There are people around the nation that never went to Notre Dame, never have been to South Bend -- hell, they may never have been within 100 miles of Indiana -- yet love Notre Dame because of its tradition and because it's on NBC every damn weekend.

I know a lot of ND fans in this situation, and none of them are jumping off the Irish wagon despite the nightmare known as Charlie Weis.

Another example is Syracuse basketball. SU started attracting a lot of recruits from outside of the Northeast in the early to mid-80s, including Los Angeles guys such as Stevie Thompson, LeRon Ellis and Mike Hopkins. All three of those guys said they were turned on to Syracuse's up-tempo style of play and huge crowds at the Carrier Dome by watching SU play on Big Monday on ESPN throughout their high school years.

ESPN was a superb recruiting tool for SU, just as the NBC package is for Notre Dame football. You don't think for a second that Coach K doesn't tell a prospective recruit, "You're going to be on national TV a heck of a lot more at Duke than at school X," at some point during the recruiting process?

              Take care,

*cosigns* As a member of the Iron Dukes, and my alma mater is Gardner Webb I'm going to say we all the time. Same goes for my pro teams. How can you police someone if they have been a fan of the same pro team most of their life or as long as they have followed the NFL by saying you shouldn't say we? I could careless what people think, but if they get up in my face and say stop it we got some problems.
