    Leaving Gamestop

I don't know why I feel the need to post this, but I am leaving Gamestop to take a sales position job with a local company. I will be making more money, but more importantly, the company that I am going to work for will help me pay for my college education.

I have been with Gamestop for about 2 years and I really am excited to be getting into a position of my field of study. No more nights, weekends, or holidays.

Just thought that I would share.

Any tips on how to get a job with Gamestop? I've had 3 applications overlooked already. I work at Movie Gallery so it would atleast be a lateral move, as MG sucks a fat one.

          Gamestop was incredibly lame.

I'm glad I stopped working there when I did, I would've killed the manager if I didn't quit.

Taking off my dev hat and putting my consumer hat on... I have a simi-related question for you all.

First off, I try and buy my games at some type of game centric store when at all possible. That said, I'm REALLY getting sick of the pre-order or don't get the game syndrome that seems to be plaguing "us". I flat out refuse to place a single pre-order and as much as it boggles the girl at Gamestop I somehow feel that I am making a stand. A itty bitty stand, but a stand nonetheless.

So where do you guys stand on pre-orders? A necessary evil? Corporate evil not wanting to take any risk actually stocking games? Good for the industry? I mean really, when was the last time you pre-ordered a pair of shoes? Perhaps you pre-order your groceries too?

Oh, and you're welcome for having your thread totally derailed countryboy =P

Penny-Arcade posted a link to an article titled something like "Confessions of a Gamestop Manager" or something of that like. According to the manager, an employees worth is measured in pre-orders they bring in. No idea how accurate that is.

Maybe that is why everytime I buy a game, the person who sells the game to me, asks me 8 times if I would like to pre-order any upcoming releases.

I dont work for Gamestop but I've never understood why people hate preordering. If I plan on buying the game the day it comes out why wouldnt I put 5 dollars down to guarantee that I will have the game the day it comes out. Also comparing a particular game to shoes or groceries isnt fair. If I wanted Jordans the day the came out, I would preorder. If I didnt care when I got them than I would take a chance and not preorder.

                      That's pretty accurate.

It helps the store if you get preorders and crap like that.

I think pre-ordering is a bunch of crow s"&%. It bugs me too because the manager at GS in my area is probably the nicest guy in the world. And he said that they get pressured to do this. It's tough putting him down,because-he's even bent the rules and held stuff for me that I didn't even pre-order. He backs off now but thanks to GS's tactics,I feel kinda guilty if something I want isn't pre-ordered .
To sum it up:IF-it's a must have game with a reliable rep,I'll go Gamestop with a trade-in. If not,I'll roll the dice and if all else fails,I have a 24 hour Walmart around the corner that will have it sooner or later.

                          Agree 100%

If I don't care about getting a game the day it comes out I won't bother preordering, if I want a game the day it comes out I preorder. Its $5 and its not that $5 doesn't go towards the game, you've already got $5 paid off once it comes out.

I see nothing to lose with the situation and you'll get the game the day it comes out.

I know back when CHoops 2k6 came out I decided no need to preorder, every gamestop in the area sold it out and I had to wait til Best Buy got it in like 5 days later, not a huge deal but I really wanted it the day it came out, definitely would've been worth it to just put a $5 preorder on it.

Only time I preorder is if there's a midnight release.

If there's not, I usually avoid game stores and just buy from a regular store.

You will change your tune when you go to buy your game that you worked on and it is sold out come release day.

In all seriousness, when it comes to baseball games the first batch that comes in is for pre-orders. They may have 5 extra mainly because the games are released at a point in the season where there is not high demand for the game yet.
