It's a macho thing. All during football season last year I took a cab to and from the bar. When my male drinking buddies discovered that I was doing this I got mocked relentlessly for being a wussy and the like, as well as some guys talking about how I "couldn't hold my liquor" and what not. So I paid the $30 to and from the bar and put up with the teasing which all sucked but guess what? I didn't kill anyone, I didn't kill myself and I didn't get a costly DUI.

Oh and btw - the women who found out I was taking a cab? They all thought it was very, very mature and complimented me on it. I honestly think it's more of a male pride thing than anything, saying you are too drunk to drive is a sign of weakness for most men. Which I think is completely ridiculous by the way!

I read about this tragedy on MSNBC about 10 minutes ago and it just was terrible to read about. I never dreamed it would affect a fellow OS'er. You are in my thoughts during this tragic time.

Exactly...I've fallen for this too, and i think everyone has. At the time you think you're fine, but you're really not.

I don't have more than a drink or two (maybe 3 over hours) if I'm driving....You have to be smart and realize that life's too short. You really don't want to go to jail or worse...

Count me in with the group that doesn't think it's a macho thing. I have a feeling for some guys it might be, but the majority, I don't think so. Only because I know some females that are very not macho, and they've done it in the past.

The truth is you have to prepared for this ahead of time. If you think you are going to drink, find a ride home. If you don't you will think you are OK to drive. When you have alcohol in you it messes up you reasoning. I hate reading stories like these, but unless the Law is a lot more stronger, then I don't think it will get much better.

              Agreed.

Have to think it is all about the "I'll be fine" complex more-so than a macho complex.

Actually the "I'll be fine" complex is in fact part of the macho and/or egotistical attitude. I'd be interested to know if men drive drunk more often than women though. Also, some women ARE macho, it's not just a male thing you know.

See, I don't think the "I'll be fine" attitude is part of the macho one, so that must be where we differ.

Personally, I know plenty of people who think they're fine and are not trying to seem macho or egotisitical at all. They just, really, think they are fine enough to drive. Happened Friday night at a party I had at my house. One of the kids said he was going to drive home because he felt fine and wanted to sleep in his own bed instead of on the floor. We kept him there and he didn't put up a fight...ended up puking in the bathroom for about twenty minutes a half hour later.

Had nothing to do with him trying to act macho, he just thought he was fine. That's the biggest problem to me: not a person's ego, not their desire to appear macho or tough...they just can't interpret the signals their body is giving them and think they are fine to drive home.

I agree. Because the "I'll be fine" complex goes along with the "I'm invinceble" complex which is part of the macho and/or egotistical attitude.

I disagree completely, for the reasons Longhorn posted above.

Yeah I guess maybe that is where some people are not seeing it how we do, they are viewing the "macho" or "egotistical" thing differently. Although someone may not openly act macho (like my friends tend to do) they are still thinking internally that they are immune to the effects, ie they are not a "wussy" and they can "handle their liquor".

The whole thing I guess i was trying to say, sorry if some of you guys didn't see my point earlier. I wasn't very clear on what I meant by "macho" behavior.

There's some macho there, but part of it is just stupidly not realizing...ever been sitting drinking for hours, think "I'm fine" and then stand up? Rocks your world...sometimes people just don't realize that they're way more impaired than they think.

I'm just staying in tonight, a friend had to bail and just not in the mood to deal with the bars.

I'm not denying that to some people it's a macho thing, but I think quite a few people just flat out don't realize how drunk they are.

But how to you explain the ladies drunk drivers. I think it has to do with the it wont happen to me complex. It is the same reason teenagers get pregnant, they don't think it can happen to them. It is what is! What ever it is it is one of those unknown reason. I have a friend that drove drunk and killed someone. He went to jail I don't know how long, but it did make him realise it can happen to him. He doesn't drink any more. I don't drink that much and when I do I don't drive. The bottom line is life is about death and when it is your time to go there isn't much you can do about it. Still sucks a family is gone and Mil has to go through all this crap, because of someone not thinking it would happen to him.
