Re: 2012--The End of the World?
What do you guys think about this? I ask because I was on another site and they were discussing this, in relation to how everyone in 1999 thought the world was going to end.
Anyways, I just looked it up and there are so many theories it's not funny.
Still, such a theory originates from the Mayan Calendar. Hmmm, how the hell would an ancient civilization provide the date for the end of the world, as specific as 2012 is, when they didnt count their years according to the way we do today?
The only way I see any of these theories coming true is a result of an asteroid, but apparently NASA already has weapons that, ala Simpsons, are prepared to strike the comets to the nearest 10th of a centimeter.
I think the human race is fine. What do YOU think?Comment

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
I don't know. I was suggesting that we'd witness the event but it would take time before it really affected us enough to kill us off.
We'll know if an asteroid hit Earth. But much like the dinosaurs, they heard it but it still took a few million years before it affected them enough to kill them off."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
One theory I heard apparently has some life to it.
Supposedly, on December 21 of that year, the sun will rise, but will be blocked from Earth by a black hole in the middle of the Milky Way, which has been discovered and does exist. This will in turn cause huge problems (obviously). I have also heard something about this causing the poles to switch.Comment

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
The Mayans saw no need to make the calendar any longer. They weren't going to live that long anyways. I have a friend who knows a historian who studies that sort of stuff and knows the Mayan calendar and he said that the Mayan Calendar simply restarts with no complications. They simply change back to year 0.
Do I think the end is near? That is a hard question. I'd like not to think so, but who knows? There's a lot of bad stuff out there today with terrorists, China, Putin in Russia, Iran, Iraq, the entire Middle East, ect., but I'm sure people felt the same way during the Cold War.
That Bible Code supposedly predicted a comet to hit in 2012, but also sometime in the 2100s. Though the Bible Code seems to be accurate to interpret past events, I do not think it can be used to prevent future events.
The following is a joke:
Of course, we all know that in 2001 we had a moon base and we discovered a black monolith under the moon's surface that we named TMA-1. It was emitting magnetic signals to another monolith in orbit of Jupiter. In 2010, we will travel to that monolith which will cause Jupiter to turn into a second sun. In 2061, we will land on Europa which has developed stunning life due to a large monolith on it's surface. In the 2500s, we will discover TMA-0 and in 3001, we will foil the alien's plan to attack our earth. Those aliens are no longer in organic form, but exist as radiation in no particular form. They live 950 light years away and in the 2000s, man's activity became unacceptable to them, thus causing them to attack us through the monolith. It took 'till 3001 to get the message back to us. A great virus will be unleashed upon the monolith by man which will cause it to malfunction saving mankind and keeping mankind safe for another 1,000 years.
If you have read the 4 Space Odyssey books, you would understand the above story.Comment

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
Another theory i've heard about 2012 and the end of the world has gained steam and it's the theory that nothing too earth shattering will happen physically but we'll experience a spiritual awakening and change not through disaster but rather from this spiritual change which will be akin to waking up and finally smelling the coffee.
I think I prefer that thought over all of us dying violently.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
Yeah I saw an episode of Nova about this very issue. Apparently the fields are weakening now to the point that the magnetic poles will reverse pretty soon. We don't exactly know what it'll do. It could be anywhere from a lot of telecommunications problems to a chain reaction of geological events that could threaten a lot of species.

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
I've also heard that on 2012 we will reach the maximum level of progress in 2012 when technology will be advancing so fast causing disaster. I can't remember the whole story, though, or what it was called.
And here is the official websire for December 21st, 2012. It looks like a cult website, LOL!

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
The Mayan civilization predicted that on December 21, 2012 something will happen to the world we know. Something will happen that will change civilization, value systems and the way we know human civilization forever.
What does that mean?
What did the Mayan see through their spiritual wisdom?
According to scientists and technologists something strange is happening behind the scene. The terrestrial and solar polar reversal peaks are coming within three weeks of that day, December 21, 2012. Innumerable UFOs are scouting our skies regularly and increasing as we approach that day. The tectonic plate shifts, underwater volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides and Tsunamis are increasing at rates never seen before. The solar flares are increasing. The earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere are experiencing strange disturbances. The numbers of typhoons and cyclones have increased many folds. The number of floods and droughts has increased beyond imaginations in the last ten years.
Scientists who look beyond conventional science point out that that the Hyperspace that contain our Universe is also showing signs that something strange is happening in our universe. The multidimensional time research is showing that a parallel universe may be predicting strange effects.
According to some scientists it is possible that another Universe is slowly starting to claim a spatial dimension in our physical Universe. It is also possible that we will face major calamities because of the polar reversal in the Sun and in Earth. If that happens, it is possible that the hyperspace has to adjust the suction force known as gravity and Electromagnetic force fields to keep the earth and the solar system intact.
The biggest clue to what will happen comes from astrophysicists. There is a big possibility that the simultaneous polar reversal in earth and sun will throw the solar system out of whack. That will cause massive upheaval in the earth. At that point of time, the extraterrestrials will officially show up and put “cosmic seat belts” around us as they apply the superpower of the Hyperspace to bring the solar system back to what it is today.
According to think tanks, this has happened before. The extraterrestrials take care of the earth and the solar system whenever the solar system faces challenges like that.CLICK ME==> NY Jets Dynasty

Re: 2012--The End of the World?
Two other posters beat me to this, but the Mayan calendar merely resets due to a change in civilization. What the change in civilization is, is vague. To be honest I am amazed the whole 2000 thing was really that big of a deal, especially since according to records Jesus was born in about 4 BC, thus we should have all feared 1996. However the fact that the Mayans are pretty good astronomers makes me hesitate to dismiss this. Who knows what will happen. I think it would be great if it were something that didn't end humanity or anything catastrophic, I kind of want to make it a little further than then.
I am curious though with some of the mega disasters increasing and such, that there is a component to that we do not consider. 200 years ago, if there was a huge flood in a completely uninhabited region, did anybody hear about it? Did we all see the video footage from the eruption at Santorini, one of the most violent volcanic eruptions which destroyed Minoan Crete with a tsunami that puts the one in 2004 to shame (150 feet vs about 15)? I wonder if maybe the reason why we think the Earth is spiraling out of control is because we didn't follow every situation as closely as we did before. Now yes, humanity has played a much larger role in shaping the environment than ever before, but I am unsure as to how crazy and out of control this world really is, compared to the 4.6 or so billion years of Earth's existance. What is a 100 year climate change in the scheme of billions? I could be wrong and maybe the experts do consider that, but I wonder how much people think about that.
Maybe with the pole reversal I heard wrong in Geology class, but doesn't that typically take tens of thousands of years? I would be more worried about Yellowstone erupting, Vesuvius wiping out Naples and the millions there, the volcano in the Canaries collapsing unleashing a giant tsunami at the east coast (which all of you within several miles of the east coast are done for), or a large earthquake in the midwest (which there are some active faults that could devestate us here in the midwest). Now I know nothing of Solar topography or geography (I have no idea what to call that, solography, anybody know the greek word for sun?) So I could be completely over my head on that.Comment
