I agree that jail doesn't work - but there are things that do work, unfortunately the system just ignores those ways and continues to fill the jails to no end.

Hey man I'm glad you are OK, and these guys didn't harm you in anyway. My mom always told me the best thing to do in that situation is to just empty your pockets and leave. Forget the money, forget your wallet, just think of your safety. You were doing the right thing by emptying your pockets, and luckily, the cops appeared. Gotta get these guys off the streets.

The only thing is that once your actually in the situation it's hard as hell to do. It's like you start feeling scared and angry at the same time. I'm thinking this is my stuff, I paid for it, I earned it, so why am I giving it to you? You're just cashing in on someone else's work.

I've thought about it numerous times today. Just what would've happened if the cops didn't come? Because I'm not 100% sure I would've emptied out my pockets (well my left pocket at least) and could've been seriously injured, or even kiiled. This is a crazy world man.

I hope I'm not jinxing myself but after 28 years of walking through the bowels of Philadelphia, inside out, over and under...walking past the homeless in Center City at night, walking through the very lonely alley ways downtown, catching the el...catching the subway...walking through North Philly, South Philly, West Philly...everywhere....I've never been held up.

Probably pure luck.

The closest I've gotten to being scared is by rats climbing up on the el platform and a homeless man that kept repeating "God bless the Chinese, may I have a quarter, please?"

I went 19 years living in New York without ever getting mugged, stuck up, or robbed. That ended today when 3 dudes approached me and told me to empty my pockets. I always wondered why people who were getting robbed don't just do what the robber tells them so they won't get hurt, especially when there's more than one guy. Unfortunately I found out why today. It's not natural to just drop or hand over your possesions, especially when those possesions include a wallet, iPod Touch, a $1700 check, and 2 flash drives (on my key chain).

I would've lost over $2000 worth of things today if it weren't for the cops. I swear it was like a damn movie. All it took was a little *whoop whoop" of the siren and these guys took off running the other way. As I picked up my keys (I had begun to empty out my right pocket first, since the iPod and wallet were in my left) two girls walked by and one of them said "Were you just getting robbed?" Of course not! I just let men on the street randomly frisk me at will . I ignored her and headed to the next block and hopped in a cab.

So, my streak is over. People talk about New York and how it's known for its crime but that's the first time I've ever been in that type of situation. Although all they took was my pen (not sure if he even meant to take it, guess he just held on to it as he ran away), it was still a somewhat frightening experience. Now that I think about it what I did was incredibly stupid (not listening and emptying out my pockets), as I could've been seriously hurt.

Glad to see you are alright man!!..But damn you live in the Bronx and haven't been robbed in 19yrs..that definently is a streak..I am born and raised in south jamaica..still live here ..i remember getting robbed on Jamaica Ave coming home from a party with my boys..took our wallets and shoes..lol..I am a counselor in the school system and the last time I was robbed was 3 yrs ago coming out of a school basketball game as i was about to get in my car..cats had a mask on took out the toolie, and took my wallet..fortunately one of the students from my school knew who did it and i got my wallet back.. Well heres to you having another 19 yr streak without getting robbed..lol

I only mention that because I've been in this area for about 22 years and never had a serious problem. I guess there was that one time I was 10 and three 12 year olds wanted to take my groceries but then decided to hand it back when they discovered it was just two lemons and adobo.

But, anyway, good to know you're alright. I always took this neighborhood as soft. Lots of people walking around thinking they are tough. My thought has always been that in mid-day they don't do a thing.

And they probably wouldn't have. To do something like in front of people and only a few blocks from that Police Precint on Webster is pretty stupid. There are cops by Bedford and Mt. St. Ursula all the time - probably because of all the girls walking through that area everyday.

They probably thought they could just gang up on you and make you do something. I still think that if you just told them to f-off and walked away you'd have been fine.

Soft people in this area.

We could always call in a firing squad and execute them. Screw the electric chair and lethal injection! We need to go back like the old days and start shooting criminals again like England did in colonial times! Of course, I am sure that would be "cruel and unusual punishment" though, haha.

Cops should have the permission to kill criminals on the spot, though, in my opinion. They are just wastes to society, so we could use the extra food they don't eat and resources they consume when they will just be the same evil selves when they get out.

Yea I was ready to throw with the one dude that initially approached me but then I saw he had two other guys with him. That and the jackets they had on deflated any ideas I had.

Bedford is usually nice, guess I just picked the wrong day.

Somewhat on topic... I was kind of in this situation once. I was in Saint Louis, in a bad part of town (near Washington University) and these two guys, looked homeless, came up to me and asked me for some money. I turned them down and as I was walking away they both grabbed my jacket and said "You gonna give us your money mutha****a". I wasn't thinking so I just broke away from their grip and ran down the street. No one else was around and if they were packing, they could've easily capped me right there and taken my money. I'm lucky I wasn't hurt.

So I know that it's hard to remember what your mother told you to do, when you're actually gettin robbed
