I'm not saying I'm throwing bombs off the jump. I would say something to them and if it escalated, I would tell my wife and kids to go wait in the car.

I guess to each their own. I don't see how a confrontation is going to help, nor does it set a good example. Some kids popped off, best thing imo, would be to just go with the kids and the wife to the car yourself and move on.

Maybe I am just old, but I don't see the need or the advantage to getting in to something for a couple of kids shooting their mouths off. Ignorant people are everywhere, it's unfortunate for sure.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess...not worth it in my mind, ever, unless they were physically threatening my family. My life or the life of my family isn't worh it. I have no problem backing down or being "punked" by some kid over some vulgar language.

IMO it's just not worth it to make a scene...Worst case they have knives and/or guns and you (or your family) gets hurt. Best case you clown some rude punk. Cons outweigh the pros by far. I've got pride, but some people I know are prideful to a fault and they'd do something stupid and die just because someone "disrespected" them. It's something I've never understood (especially with gang culture...it's like "he looked at me, kill him", just crazy...)

Agreed. Maybe it's because I am getting older, or because I have seen to many situations like this escalate way out of control, but to be honest it's not worth the effort for me. I've got way too much to lose if things go south.

Figured i might as well pipe in on this too. It has to do with alot of sources, i.e. parenting, friends, upbringing, but i think times are different now. Im 28, and ive heard my parents tell stories about them when they were young and the same with my grandparents. To me, and maybe its just marshmellow wishes and sugar drop dreams, but it seems like in the 50's, 60's etc that people were genuinely nice to each other, for the most part. People said hello to strangers on the street, held doors for one another.

I know i HATE it when i hold a door for someone and i dont get a thanks or a smile. Im not doing it for the reward, but its nice to be acknowledged.

I think the big part of it goes to social context, how we communicate. We've gotten to the point where the majority of our converstaions with friends is via email, cell phone or myspace/facebook. No one knows how to communicate anymore. Everything has to be done so fast that we lose the personal touch and forget social norms.

That, on top, of every story now has to be the best ever or with the biggest turn. You cant just say "I ate lunch today", its gotta be "I ate the best/worst lunch ever and here's why....."

I think people's communication these days is awful. I go out of my way to make sure i get together with my friends and not just email everything or facebook it. I try to smile at people on the street, say hey, strike up idle conversation on an elevator. We're all in the same world, might as well make the best of it.

Agreed. Just a little politeness would be nice. Just the other day I was in the office, and this lady was carrying in some things so I held the door open for her. Didn't even acknowledge my presence. Not looking for anything major. But a smile or a simple thank you would have been nice, imo.

I usually do that, or i start talking loudly to myself "Thanks for holding the door, no, really, it wasnt a problem, well thanks again, hey anything i can do to help"

That usually gets them to turn around and look, but i only do that if im severly irritated.

It works well when it sounds like you're having a conversation with yourself. Some people usually turn around give a sheepish smile or realize that they couldve said thanks.

Im telling you, cell phones are great, but that and social sites (my space) are gonna ruin human interaction. No one has time for anyone anymore, let alone a stranger, or a quick hello or cup of coffee with a friend.

No one knows how to socialize in person anymore. They don't know what is and isn't acceptable by the society I grew up in. They've created their own social mores.

Yep....95% of the things that 99% of the kids who talk disrespectful in a virtual way would probably crap their pants and say nothing if they had to do it in front of the person. When you deal with people directly, you have to learn how to manage yourself.

I guess I have changed over the past couple years. When I was 12-18, I would curse a lot (of course not in front of my parents) in casual conversation. Then I just kind of stopped, I don't really know what it was, but I stopped. I will still use certain words every now and then, usually for a comical effect, but I use more of the "lower level" curse words, and am always aware of who I am saying these things around. I don't really have a problem with people using some of those words if nobody is around, but it just starts to sound stupid to me to use the f word multiple times in a sentence.

I do wish people were friendlier to eachother.

I'm very mindful of everything my son does/says. But I know not all parents are, and some flat out don't give a ****. It's no excuse to be a lazy parent and just say, "Oh well he's just gonna do it anyway". He might, but it won't be because of my lack of parenting.

Then again, I'm already starting to wonder what I'm gonna say when he asks me about those creepy Cialis commercials they play all through football and baseball day games. It's just a different world now.

And you're right. Most people have **** people skills. However for the few that do and couple that with real communication skills, the world will be their oyster.

I teach at a school in inner city London. That kind of behavior would be an improvement from what it normally is.

I also have no little hope for today's youth.

I'm the same way as davin, in my younger days (14-18) I sometimes went out of my way to be loud or disrpectful in my demeanor in public.

I didn't cuss in front of kids, but I cussed and acted like an idiot sometimes. After I got older and especially now - the thrill is gone. It has a lot to do with maturity. The "young men" and I use the term "men" loosely here - that go around tryin to act hard and run their mouth are immature and it really shows and looks embarrasing when you get older like me. I just shake my head and walk on.
