Yeah, if you've ever worked in the F&B industy, you'd understand just how important tips are. Many servers make under minimum wage, so the tip is really their paycheck. If you're sitting for an hour and don't leave a tip and the server is making $3 or less, then that person is making just $3 an hour. That's just wrong. It may not be the classiest job (your typical server is college age or it's their second job as they're trying to make ends meet), but these people are still putting in their time and they deserved to be paid for it.

I'm by no means rolling in cash, but if I'm going out to eat, then I'm leaving a good tip (20%). I can tell you from firsthand experience that a good tip helps all parties; you'll be remembered and you can really make a server's day by leaving a good tip. Many places offer take-out nowadays, so if you can't afford the extra few bucks that makes up the tip, pick up and don't waste a server's time.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

I'm going to bring this thread back up as I just had an odd tipping story this weekend.

So the family and I went to a resort up north for a small vacation. They had a restaurant in the resort which we ate at for every meal while we were there. Since my daughter is only 1, we try to eat back in the room so we don't bother other customers when my daughter starts flinging food everywhere. So technically it's room service, but they don't deliver to our rooms, so I had to walk to the restaurant and pick it up.

When they charge me, they give me the usual receipt that has a section for Tips. I never tip when I pick up my own food, so I always leave it blank and just sign my name. Well on 2 occasions, I actually paid in cash. First time, was for breakfast and the bill was $13.56. I gave the server $15, and since she was nice and was very talkative and loved our daughter, I didn't bother asking for the change back. Which was fine as it was only a dollar and some change.

The 2nd time, we ordered dinner and the bill came out to $34 and some change. I give the server $40, and she politely says thank you and have a nice night. I stop her and say "I'm sorry, can I have my change.." she gives me this weird look, nothing bad, but kind of like, "what a cheapo"

I waited about 10 minutes for my change, during this time I start questioning myself on whether or not I should of let her keep the change.

So my question is, do you guys tip when you pick up food from a restaurant? The server doesn't do anything but take the food from the kitchen, bag it up, and then hand it off to me. Does that warrant a tip?

I used to be a server, so when I do tip, I try to tip pretty generously, but I felt and feel that people who just hand you your items, and not actually make them, should not be tipped.

^^^^ In that case, nope. You don't tip the cashier at a pizza place when you order carryout. IMO, this is no different.

I definitely wouldn't tip if I picked it up myself.

I would've been furious waiting that long for my change. If I'm picking up a carry out order, I ain't tipping.

                  You tipped what??

I tell ya, I'm an incredibly cheap bastard. I was in Vegas this weekend where my flight and hotel was paid for. I was at the JW Marriott and my reservation included a free breakfast buffet. The place was quaint, and service was nice. They removed the $20+ fee and there was a line for gratuity. I penciled in $5.00.

The way I saw it, it was 25% of my bill, and even then it was swiped clean, so they should be lucky they got that.

Yeah, I'm not making many friends in high places here haha. Maybe that's why I didn't get the same waitress the next time. Then again, it's a buffet so they really only served me my drinks and asked how my food was.

Ok well I'm glad I'm not the only one. And the wait wasn't so bad. Maybe it was more like 5 minutes than 10. But I was still dumbfounded when the server took the card/money holder and walked away after thanking me. What if I were to put a $100 bill in there?

Actually, maybe this is the reason she did it. If she walks away not asking if you want change, you could easily just walk away and forget that you had changed leftover, which then gives her an extra tip.

Yeah, I'm not tipping if I am picking my food up. You weren't wrong here.

Unprofessional on her part. Even if I know a person is going to tip me the change, I always gave them an option to leave it or take it. "I'll go make change for you really quick." "No it's all for you." Simple as that.

When I get a tip working the register at the pizza shop, it's awesome. No I don't expect it but it is a good feeling, so I usually leave a buck or two when I carry out. But I'm not looking down on you for not doing it because its really not necessary. I just feel like a couple bucks, even for a paycheck-to-paycheck guy like myself, is something I can afford. Good karma, I suppose.

This falls into the gear grinding post I made the other day. When I order pizza, I put tip on the card at time of purchase, usually 15-20%, plenty generous for delivery when you drive maybe 3 miles round trip. I get the evil eye quite often, as if they wonder why I'm not handing them any money... when the receipt they hand me already says I left several dollars for them.

                              That's really odd.

One of my best friends was a pizza guy for several years, and he gave me the guidelines for tipping back in the 90's lol. Anyway, I'm a good pizza tipper, and the delivery guys and gals are always happy at my door...and I prepay like you do. Guess the drivers you get aren't too observant...or they hate your neighbor's dog or something. lol

Actually experienced something for the first time this past weekend.

Wife and I went to dinner with a large party. Obviously gratuity was included in the final bill, which was split into separate checks. Anyway, one woman went crazy when she saw her check and demanded the included gratuity be removed because she claimed the service was poor. It was a Friday night so it was busy but service was far from poor. Sure enough, the waitress removed her tip and my wife and I handed her cash to compensate for her lack of tip from that woman.

Never have seen that before... Someone ask the gratuity be removed.... I can see it happening if service is poor but not in this case.
