Yeah I do but servers are bringing you your food. They may not be making it but they can still have an effect on the quality of the product.

Hell yeah, that person has to touch my fat, balding head and try to make it look good. Gotta tip

Well for starters, both are providing you a service.

One is driving you around and the other is serving you food. Not really that much of a difference when looking at the grand scheme of things.

What most important though is how they are compensated by their employers.

You admit to tipping someone who takes your bags even though he is being fully compensated for his hours with tips being over the top of that.

Restaurant servers are not fully compensated, they rely on tips and cab drivers are exactly the same with the difference being if a server doesn't make enough with tips to equal minimum wage their employer is required to compensate them for the difference.

NONE of that is true for cab drivers.

They are essentially in a business for self industry. THey do not get a wage, AT ALL. They rent the car from the cab company, their payment to the cab company is the percentage of the cut they give up for their fares.

They have to pay for their own gas. More than any other industry, they rely on tips to make a living.

I just don't see how you have no problem tipping a server at a restaurant or someone picking up your bags but you have an issue tipping someone who is driving you around?

They are all services provided to you, what makes this service different than other services you are willing to tip for??

Did not know any of this. I thought they paid rent for the cars and kept everything over that. I'll adjust, but I still think taxi cab drivers are where the lines start to blur on tipping expectations.

I usually give a 20% tip, and the places I go I usually spend about $10-12 so I give $2-3. My problem is I'm going with friends who aren't willing to chip in. I'm personally only making minimum wage (freshmen in college and this is my first job) and don't have the money to cover everyone's tip. I guess I shouldn't eat out with cheap people.

In the future if I'm in a good financial situation and am making a lot of money I'm probably gonna tip take out places even if the employees make or make more than minimum wage. I wouldn't have done this if I didn't work at the place I do now.

I work at a sub shop and don't expect tips at all but when I do get one it's nice, even if it's $1. Personally I don't think Drew Bree's was cheap if I took a $70 order at work $3 would be a nice tip.

Speaking of rich people tipping I saw this article on Taylor Swift who tipped $500 on a $800 bill

That's why you do separate checks when you go with a group. Your bill is your responsibility.

We do and I tip 20% but my $2 is still not enough when no one else tips

Such an annoyance 99% of the time.

Very, very, very rarely does a table splitting the check ever work out for the server.

I'm never going to feel bad for splitting a check. That's their job.

Didn't say you should feel bad.

There's a reason some restaurants won't let you do it, though. Luckily our computer system makes it easy enough for us so it doesn't take that much extra time.

Splitting checks shouldn't be a problem, just let the server know beforehand, so it can be separated on the server's notepad.

                          It's a bitch to remember Person A got a coke, Person B a water, Person C a beer, etc.

It did bug me one time when our server said they would try to when we made it known at the onset. Nah, you're gonna do it. If we can't via policy, okay. But don't "try." Get it done.

its never a problem because they always write it down per person/seat so its easy to remember who gets what

It's not your responsibility though. You paid your tip, the server isn't going to be out to get you. Sure, might be embarrassing, but like 55 said, get new friends if you don't like that you have to make up for their shortcomings.
