Usually do 20% for good/average service, 25% for excellent and 15% for poor. Never have really done it any differently.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Yea, I said this ages ago, you have to be careful who you say this to, though. Someone living there, though, would be aware obviously. In Delaware, we have 0% sales tax. In Chicago, it's over 9%. In Maryland, it's 6%. One's a no-no, one is cheap, and one is pretty good.
Doubling the tax is a copout also for those who can't move a decimal place and divide by 2 or double, then add. That gives you 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, etc... in seconds.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I've started tipping better since I have 2 kids who tend to leave a bigger mess than the average customer. I'm also more willing to give the server the benefit of the doubt for slow service. The only time I don't tip as much is when the server drops off the food, and then disappears for the rest of the time we're there. They at least have to come back and check on us to get the full amount.Comment

my wife brings home a sales receipt every night and she receives few cash tips anymore its all down via credit/debit.Last edited by HustlinOwl; 07-03-2013, 12:53 PM.Comment

I believe they are taxed on any gratuity received from a debit/credit card transaction which is why they prefer cash tips.
They are theoretically supposed to report cash tips as well but that is an impossible paper trail to follow so I don't think they generally do.
They can't be taxed on sales because that is not income they are receiving.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Credit cards and computers in restaurants take care of providing actual tips for the majority of orders. When my wife served in college, she would get a statement at the end of the night showing a breakdown of her total tickets, credit card tickets, credit card tips, cash tickets and I believe an assumed 8% for cash tips (on cash orders). This is apparently what was supposed to be reported for tax returns.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I don't see anything wrong with that...I have no ways to, not that I would, avoid being taxed. I would venture to guess 80% of those who can get away with not reporting cash tips, do so.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I thought this was intereting. I dont agree with some of this. I stopped shopping at the exchange on base in Alaska since you were supposed to tip the person who took your groceries out to the car. I can take my own bags.

-If you go above and beyond your job, ok. A grocery bagger is paid to bag my groceries. I shouldn't have to give him any more. If he takes them to my car, yes, tip.
-A barista is supposed to make my coffee. Great, you did that. Why should you get any more?
-The shuttle bus driver at the airport, I could understand. I always can manage my own bags, but if you get extra help, tip.
-Building superintendent? That's their job to fix what's messed up. Now, if you went and broke something, sure. But I shouldn't have to tip you so that you repair your own faulty parts in a timely manner. My rent already pays your salary.
-Grooming/Salon/Etc... eh, this one I don't know. It is their job to cut your hair, your dogs hair, whatever. I've always tipped whoever cut my hair, but not one I necessarily agree should exist to begin with.
-I don't agree with tipping electronics store employees. They sell large items: TV's, washer's, dryers, sound systems, refrigerators. They know they are going to be taken to somebody's car quite a bit. Anytime I've bought something, someone specifically comes from the back that moves heavy things. I assume he was told in the job requirements "must be able to move/lift X amount of weight". That's why the little guy on the sales floor isn't doing it.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Some industries tipping has become an unnecessary custom. If you get paid a salary or a decent hourly wage, tips shouldn't be expected at all. But if you do an extraordinary job and someone wants to show their appreciation there's nothing wrong with that. My comments earlier were referring to people who live off their tips. All this extra money people get for no reason is very questionableStudent of the game. #Fundamentals

Oh my god. This is ridiculous! This just makes tipping look outrageous.

If I had been handed a tip I wouldn't have known what to do with it LOL.
On a side note.....one of those house calls led to some great playThough I never hit on a customer in a store, she had to call me after I got home from her house call and ask me out. LOL Part shy, part professional, that was me.

Haha well, I can't judge on miscellaneous benefits, but good to know someone who actually did the job agrees. I mean, if someone wants to give one? Sure! But to me, it shouldn't be expected.Comment

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet, as this pretty much sums up the back and forth here.
