The delivery charge itself is nothing but them getting more money out of you. If you (not you specifically) wanna punish the driver for that, that's between you and the person handling your food. I mean you pay more to get it delivered in some places than the dine in tax.

I always go pick it up if I don't want to drop a tip for the driver.

Pick-up ALWAYS for me. It's always hot and fresh, and having worked in restaurants I know when the food will be ready (not always the quote time). At dinner/lunch rush, give more time.

The delivery charge never made sense to me. Maybe it's to pay for the service, but isn't that included in the price of the food already? Always seemed like a hustle because the driver gets only a portion of that charge. Pretty sure not many people know this, and it's why drivers get crap tips. Sure, they print it on the box that delivery charge isn't tip, but the public doesn't know how to read and why do they care?

Anyway, I tip well and often including takeout. I know it sucks behind the counter and I like to make people's day. The guys at a place I order maybe once a week at light up when I walk in and always hook it up. It's worth a couple bucks. I don't expect anyone else to tip takeout, but I just feel empathetic towards those guys. Keeps me grounded knowing I was that guy before and how much a couple bucks a night meant to me. We didn't have a tip jar, just a line to write in info or give cash. That people took a second to thank you without being prompted to in this world is something I won't forget and want to pay forward.

Ok where I live most pickup places have a tip line and ask me to sign the receipt, almost like they're expecting a tip whenever I just pick up food. Do you just sign your name? Or write zero on the tip line?

They need that signature in case you dispute the transaction. It's not a scheme, I assure you. Although some places may do it for that reason.

You don't have to feel guilty not tipping takeout.

One semi-related topic that stems from a discussion my wife and I were having...

Whenever we go to a restaurant that we have a coupon for (our local high school boosters sell books that go toward the program), I always add the amount of the discount/coupon to the tip total as well. If we've got a $50 bill and I've got a 20% off coupon, the new bill is $40 but I'll add that $10 discount back on as tip, normally in addition to tip.

Is this common or am I crazy like she says?

I think most restaurants' POS systems are set-up to print out receipts with a tip line. I have no qualms with writing the total down with no added tip.

Most places just use the same POS systems which there is just always a tip line regardless of the service.

I don't think people always do this but it's definitely polite.

I don't like that tipping is based so much off of what your bill is. Like if I get a 15 dollar entree or a 30 dollar one, the waiter does the same amount of work but is compensated differently.

I wouldn't be a repeat customer many places if that's your mentality.

I ALWAYS tip at least the change from the bill. I am gonna be looking for a job in a week or two (my 18th birthday is on the 12th) and I'm mainly looking at host/server jobs at places like Red Lobster/Applebee's but I always tip because tips are very important to workers.
