Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

I want to make a poll for everyone.

Say you have 2 identical restaurants with identical dishes.

The first one allows tips and the food is cheaper.

The second one doesn't allow tips but the food is more expensive.

Which one would you go to?

My whole issue with tipping is the fact that it has become an expectation which has driven down the service.
Yeah and this is where I see both sides of the argument. I don't like the argument that says "find a better job," but I do think asking that it be earned is a great argument.

I think you should still tip but if the service is awful, hand a dollar or two on a $10 tip. I think that alone drives home the message along with speaking to the manager. Always do that. You can't expect better service without informing the establishment why it was bad.

      Good service goes both ways.

But yes, one major issue is expectation from the staff. They think any service is worth 15% and that's a horrible selfish attitude.

As a person walking into the bartending industry, I know I'm gonna survive on tips. And yes I do "expect" to make tips. But I also expect that I make the drinks right, that I remain attentive of the patrons, that I smile and treat everyone like my own brother or sister.

If I don't, I shouldn't expect you to leave me a dollar on that $6 beer.

sorry, but simply not tipping does not hit home with a server and does the exact opposite they believe that youre cheap and rude. Instead why dont you talk with manager during your meal and leave a comment card.

Depends on the salaries of the waiters/waitresses.

I'd go with the restaurant where the food is cheaper but allows the wait staff to except tips. Rather my money go in their pockets instead of the restaurant owners. They could probably use the money more and having worked as a waiter many years ago I can assume they need that money.

You go to the one that allows tips whether you're a good tipper or not.

If you don't tip, congratulations you just made someone work for free and got a cheaper meal then the alternative. If you do tip, you get better service more than likely and are able to reward your server whether that's to the tune of more then the expensive establishment or less depending on what you got.

Give me the one with the better atmosphere as when I do go out I like to have a nice time without hearing kids/babies screaming in table next to me.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

Had a $ 55 meal @ a buffet @ the beach this weekend. My wife wanted to leave a $ 5 tip. I ended up leaving $ 12 for the waiter. Made the dude's nyte. He thanked me 3 times before leaving. I don't make a whopping amount of money, but I am doing pretty well for now. I don't mind giving a bit more than usual.

I don't see what the big deal is on tipping. I see nothing wrong with someone making money off of tips, given the current system. I don't tip with malice either.

My wife actually was pissed at me for that tip. Told her if you can't afford to tip well, you can't afford to eat out.

A buffet is a whole different animal. Not sure if they actually get paid less than min wage. They don't actually wait on you, other than taking your plates. I usually tip a lot less there, 5$ tops.

Can't tell you the last time I ate at a buffet, but if I did I would most decently lave a tip.

Tipping is one of those things I just do. It's actually benefits all parties involved. I feel like a good person for leaving a generous tip and it helps out the person the excepting it.

It's just one of those things I do. No science behind it like some posters in here make it out to be.

Agreed. Most of the time the total for a buffet comes out to $ 20 - $ 30 dollars, depending on the cuisine. $ 5 is the standard for me on those prices. Maybe a bit more @ the higher end.

But this dude had my niece crying the whole time, my son crying the whole time, and my wife complaining b/c the changing station was ****ty. This probably frustrated those around us, who then leave a crappy tip. It wasn't his fault.

I was told by a former waitress to tip twice as much as the tax(8%).

I hate when people do this. Depending on the tax rate you could end up leaving less than 15%.
