I while back I got in the habit of paying with the card but tipping with cash.

That still the preferred way from a servers point of view?

See my question above, but if I end up adding the tip to the card I round every time.

I think for me it goes back to seeing my mom and dad do it. My mom was an accountant and they had a family business. She always said it was quicker to do the family books with the rounded numbers.

        Cash over everything always.

I agree it's a rude approach, but it probably pales in comparison to treatment she gets from some customers, thus it probably seems reasonable to her.

Were it me in that situation as a customer, I might've asked the waitress to come bring me something so I could get a moment to figure out the tip without the inquisition, lol.

I was going to say, she's probably had people tip her horribly. When she puts them on the spot, making a decision between 18 and 20%, she probably does better even though it is off putting and unprofessional. I understand it, but I don't agree with it at all.

My question is, how can she add the % herself? That's for the customer to write in and sign off on. The OP could've said yeah 20% but when he went to sign the check he doesn't have to write in whatever 20% was. And it's illegal for her to sign his name and/or mess with the check at all.

My only guess is the restaurant has a gratuity for large parties policy. She probably enters that in to the system somehow. Shady as **** if you ask me.

I do wonder if putting people on the spot about their tip would make a difference. I'm willing to bet it would. I'm sure there's people who know what they're doing when they leave a minuscule tip or nothing at all, wonder if doing it right to the server's face would make a difference.

Also I could be a dick and write a poor Yelp review. I won't because I don't do that kind of stuff.

It's a shame because I really liked the restaurant and the food.
If you don't write a review how else are we supposed to know the quality of the establishment's fryer oil?

The situation with the waitress asking is odd but I guess I give people the benefit of the doubt. If I was in a situation where I worked somewhere, and maybe she's getting screwed on tips regularly, I would probably think to ask the customer because there's nothing else you can do, and as the customer, we have to know that. We have to understand that any number of idiots could have been screaming at this chick all day or that people don't tip because they just don't want to. I guess it's just hard for me to see someone take the only option they have and be punished for it. It's like telling them to take the good with the bad but saying I don't have to because I'm the customer. But this is also why I don't work in food, or with people generally lol.

All I have to add is that the people I know that are hardest on servers (and not in favor of automatically going overboard with tips) are currently (or have themselves been) servers.

I never stiff anyone and I pretty much tip 20% on every meal, but the expectations of tips from everyone for everything is starting to wear on me. Food servers and a small handful of other services used to be it. Now, it's everyone with a job that requires you to see them in any capacity.

I try to keep it pretty simple. I really only tip when being served food/drink (servers, bartenders, delivery people) or when I'm on vacation somewhere and I know that's the primary means of income (tour guides, valets, bellhops). Lastly, when I get my hair cut. That's always a tippable situation. I can't think of other situations where I feel compelled to tip.
