Sorry to hear that man, hope something comes along quickly that can get you back out there in the working world again.

At this point I'm thinking that if my father's company folds I will just go back to school to become a friggen gym teacher. Between that, coaching and officiating I would be able to make $60k a year to start and could get up over six figures over the course of time. And in the grand scheme of things it would be a very stress free career especially after getting tenured.

Sorry man.. At this point it is probably safe to say I won't be employed till January. Don't see many companies wanting to hire right now (full time/non-seasonal).

Just curious, but are you collecting unemployment, get a severance package from your old job or just hanging out or what? I never really understood unemployment, I mean couldn't you go bus tables or work retail or do something to earn some cash? Not trying to be insensitive, just wondering how the system works. One of my boys who lives in Queens is on unemployment but he only gets like $450 a month. No idea how anyone could survive on that, let alone in NY.

No problem -- it sort of feels that I am "hanging out". Yes, I am getting a severance package right now (not much really since I was with the company for about 6 years), and getting unemployment. Each day is the daily grind of resume sendouts, newspaper checkings, phone calls -- almost like a job except without the pay
At 34, I'm in that "what can/should I do" mode.

From what I understand, in NY you can collect unemployment even if you worked part time (you can't earn more that $405/week, which is what the pay is each week). At some point, I may have to go into retail/busing tables - but I am trying to get a full time position in the areas which my background is in (customer service and/or management). I have applied to work at some retail stores - but so far haven't received any dibs at all.

Long Island, like everywhere now, is being hit pretty hard right now with the poor economy. I read in a local paper that the jobs created the past few months was rather weak - in fact only education and the health fields were the only two careers that gained any jobs.

I am tossing around the idea of going back to school to get my Masters, and realize that I will have to accept a pay cut to get something.

I'm doing that and my pride/ego is in the gutter! January 12th can't get here soon enough so I can start my job!

                Re: Being unemployed really sucks

Heh all. I had posted a while back about moving out to Colorado from PA and not being able to find work. Well I still am not working. And the jobs I am looking for, which are video editing, motion graphics and animation aren't even hiring anymore. And for the 2-3 jobs I've seen in the last 3 months they want you to know Final Cut Pro which I don't.

I know Avid and Premiere Pro. I even had the opportunity for a freelance gig in December which would have been about 2 days work and the scope of the project changed so they said they don't need to bring me on.

At least my wife took a vet job so we are now in a house, renting, and are getting settled. I am 35 and have 10 years in my field and am in the same boat as someone else who said they are 34. I am not sure what to do. I am taking a class in December to learn Final Cut but like I said there aren't really any jobs hiring anyway.

And like someone else mentioned about the retail people not calling. I've had that same issue. I applied at Best Buy and Radio Shack and no luck. Best Buy did the same go online thing and I never heard. And I applied for an Audio Visual Tech job at the Marriot in Fort Collins. Now I've been in the video field for 10 years and at one point was doing remote shoots hooking up trucks to decks and camera and whatnot and they told me I wasn't qualified enough to be an AV Tech.

And IMO it only looks like it's getting worse. Fortunlately my wife is working so I am doign the stay at home Dad thing right now but I am just not cut out for it.

I hope something comes along eventually.

I applied to all kinds of retail, fast food, even UPS seasonal work. They can fill those jobs easily with anyone. Why would Target hire me over some high school graduate or single mom who has worked in retail for years? Plus, the second they see my resume, they know when I get offered a real job, I'm going.

If one of those places still called me for an interview, I'd jump all over it.

Finally it looks like something will happen. I was just offered a customer service position with National Grid (power company) here....

Not a great deal of money, but it's better than collecting unemployment.......

Good to hear, Isles. I took one of "those" jobs to get back to work last year, but eventually I found the job I'm in (and quite happy at) now. It was a measly little one line add in the newspaper -- "Student Advisor for North Side vocational school call XXX-XXX-XXXX -- that I almost dismissed. Man am I glad that I didn't. I guess I'm trying to say keep your hopes up and eyes/ears/mind open...

Yeah - it's actually a "unionized" job, that I have to wait 6 months to qualify for benefits (probationary period until then)..

They said there are plenty of opportunities for advancement, as well as making OT money..

Glad to hear it man, congrats and hopefully it branches the gap until you can find a job in whatever field you really want to get work in. Congrats again.

Thanks.. went for the usual "fill out paperwork" and the always fun drug test today..

Job starts Jan 12, which gives me a little bit more "vacation" time
