Cosign. No one that tries to fight a two-front war against Russia (in the winter, no less) and America & Britain can be called a "great strategist." The Germans were doomed when they tried to invade Russia in the winter in the first place. The fact that they tried to do it while still fighting in western Europe was just ridiculous (from a war point of view; from a personal point of view I'm quite happy the Germans self destructed).

Well that's where hubris falls in. Hitler thought he could get a peace treaty done with England or at the very least work on a coup from within with King Edward the VIII and a government led by Oswald Mosley. Even if he couldn't get peace he didn't think England would continue the struggle once he turned attention eastward. It was one of the biggest blunders of the war but even still at that point in time Germany could've still won the war with some shrewd thinking.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Well this is wonderful news...
There's no way Germany could have won the war. Their level of production compared to the US and Soviets was a joke. There's absolutely no way Germany could have occupied that much territory. Once they invaded France they had signed their death, and once they invaded Russia, the clock was ticking. There's no circumstance where the Soviets wouldn't have won unless the US came in on the German side.Comment

1. The US was not in the war at that point in time and Hitler actually DIDN'T want the US involved because he knew they could ramp up production a lot faster and better then Germany ever could. The Japanese however went all halfcocked and forced Germany to declare war on the US.
2. Actually the invasion of Russia could've worked. Let's not use revisionist history here. If Germany had started that invasion a month earlier or the bitter Russian winter hadn't arrived sooner then expected then Germany would've had Russia or at the very least all the territory of Russia from the west to Moscow. The German army was only 150 or so Km away from Moscow when the winters came.
I don't think Hitler would've wanted to take ALL of Russia as the eastern part would've been under Japan's sphere of influence. Hitler definitely would want all the oil and natural gas reserves though.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

There's no way Germany's invasion could have worked. I don't doubt that they could have reached Moscow, but that's not winning the war. Hundreds of cities have been reached and some even taken by states who would go on to lose the war they were fighting. The winter still would have came, the German's still would have had no supplies, and they were still fighting a relentless enemy that outnumbered them, out equipped them, had better equipment, out produced them, hated them, and was defending their land from a bunch of German hoes. The Russians would have died before being ruled by the Nazis, but it would have never come to that.
Even if somehow, the Germans managed to defeat the Russian army, all they would have had was a few thousand miles of land with no one in it.Comment
