It's part of Georgia and they want to split. Russia wants to spank Georgia because they like the west and also there is an oil pipeline there. I know the Ossetians are the same ethnic group as the Iranians. Georgians are caucasians and have feared Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union.
It's a mess. Russia DOES and is drilling, drilling, drilling and do supply tons of natural gas. Russia is moving on this right now while we argue over drilling on our own land. Oil and energy has been a problem throughout the world, it's just now coming to light now that our own gas prices have gone up. People are paying a little more attention.

My wife's parents came from Georgia (no, they're not American citizens, morons...lol). Georgians have this strange language and special writing, it's so different from Russian.My Specs:

Probably not, but I could definitely see NATO or the EU looking into doing something. Major wars don't flare up over territorial claims and such like they did in the past.

I don't even see that happening. No major powers will go to war against each other directly as it is right now. I imagine we'll chalk up Georgia like Russia, China, France, and Germany chalked up Iraq. Obviously opposed, but not remotely enough to actually go to a serious war over it. Now, if Russia starts going on a mad 1940s like annexation, then there will be some involvement, but if you've been keeping up, it's not like the Georgia invasion was a surprise. The actual day of the invasion was, but this has been building for quite a while. As much as the Tom Clancy fans might be disappointed, the great US/China/Russian war isn't happening.Comment

Well, if Russia starts invading other lands of the old USSR, there will be a large-scale war, possibly a nuclear war. You think we're going to sit around and watch Russia invade the likes of Ukraine, the Baltics, East Germany, the countless "Istan" countries, and parts of western Europe? Those countries are going to fight back and there would be a high probability that we'd get involved.
Of course, then you have countries like Iran and North Korea who will start a nuclear war and not worry about retaliation because they'll do anything to harm the US or the West. North Korea wants South Korea badly. Then you have Tawain who the Chinese still despise. They weren't even able to use their real flag or their real name in the Olympics this year. There's always the possibility of a small-scale war breaking out over Tawain that could eventually flare up into World War Three if other countries get involved. After all, much of the reason World War I started was because of the killing of a Duke.
I think that a conflict with Iran is coming as well, whether it is us taking the military or Israel. Israel will do (and should do) everything they can to prevent the Iranians from getting nuclear weapons, as evidenced back in 1981 when they blew up one of Saddam's nuclear research facilities.Comment
