You think we're going to sit around and watch Russia invade the likes of Ukraine, the Baltics, East Germany, the countless "Istan" countries, and parts of western Europe?
And Russia has shown no sign of wanting to invade any of those states. They pretty much said they were invading Georgia a few months ago.

Of course, then you have countries like Iran and North Korea who will start a nuclear war and not worry about retaliation because they'll do anything to harm the US or the West.
      No you do not.

North Korea wants South Korea badly
      Get serious.

After all, much of the reason World War I started was because of the killing of a Duke.
And that isn't happening again. A lot of strange things happened way back that won't happen in the 2000s.

You're way too alarmist with worst case scenarios that aren't happening. The great thing about living in the location we have is that we don't have to really worry about anything. I believe theat China and us are the two most economically intertwined states in the world. We aren't going to war. And contrary to popular belief, Russia isn't going to start a war that would end the world. Realistically, the worst that could happen to us would be a small nuclear bomb going off in DC, New York, or Long Beach which wouldn't do nearly as much damage as people would believe. Any state that would even think about harming the US would have to either cross the oceans which would be impossible with our navy and air force, or engage us in a nuclear exchange, a fight that we'd win pretty easily. Don't worry.

Wait a minute, did it become not against the TOS to talk about politics suddenly?
I'm under the impression that the politics in the TOS more or less refers to US domestic red/blue pettyness, not major world events. If not, then I'll delete my posts.

I see a bunch of people making jokes about Georgia the country and Georgia the state mixed in with superjames' nonsense about a possible nuclear war. I don't see anything political.

This has the potential to be really bad, especially with Georgia being a democratic country and all. Man, I hope I am wrong, but there is a real chance we get involved in this somehow. What happened to the American in China seemed like an omen.

You can close the thread now, I know we're not supposed our concerns for the world.

Well, I'm under the belief that we are living in the "Last Days". How do you all not see the world going to hell in a handbasket? We have hostile countries getting nukes while we do nothing about it. I'm not saying that this will start a large-scale war, but it's certainly possible. We are probably on the brink of a large-scale war over the next 20-30 years with a possible peak-oil scenario coming, not to mention food shortages from an increasing population. Then you have hostile, crazy dictators in Iran and South Korea, a strengthening Russia, another dingbat in Venezuala, and the dangerous Middle East. We are not as safe as some may think. The time is coming when a nuclear attack from a suicide bomber happens in the US most likely. I hate to be all gloom and doom, but I don't think these things are that far out there. It doesn't take much to set off things. With the world becoming increasingly interconnected, one small war could turn into World War III.

Why so? If it wasn't for us, North Korea would have easily won the Korean War. And if it wasn't for our continued presence in the form of thousands of troops and military supplies along the thirty-eighth parallel today, North Korea would easily overrun South Korea today. Seoul can be easily hit by artilery across the parallel. The entire government would be in shambles, not to mention that the North Koreans have a much larger and more powerful military and possess nuclear weapons. The South wouldn't stand a chance without our help.

You're what, 14? You don't even have a baseline for when the world wasn't messed up.

Iran isn't going to do anything, and lil Jong is a punk. At worst, Iran gets blown up and gas goes up a bit. North Korea is a joke of a threat. They're the ANWR of world threats; they've ceased being relevant, and now are just a symbol that people cling to.

                  another dingbat in Venezuala
What's Chavez going to do? Keep buying PSAs until he bores us to death?

And you don't have to worry about that in North Carolina. Then again, the chances of this happening are incredibly low. The CIA, FBI, and NSA exist for a reason.

It doesn't take much to set off things.
It takes more than it ever has in the past.

With the world becoming increasingly interconnected, one small war could turn into World War III.
Except that pretty much ever modern political science theory is the exact opposite of what you just said.

And if it wasn't for our continued presence in the form of thousands of troops and military supplies along the thirty-eighth parallel today, North Korea would easily overrun South Korea today.
And if it wasn't for laws and police, people would be out killing each other over shoes every 35 minutes. But neither laws nor the United States military are leaving any time soon. Seoul can be hit easily and a ton of damage could be done, but aside from the US, any location on Earth could be "easily hit".

Re: Georgia under attack as Russian tanks roll in!

Well i'll refrain from getting political but I will say that SuperJames is jumping up and down over something that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. The EU/NATO/UN will make some strongly worded statements and maybe a punishment that's tantamount to a slap on the wrist.

This only looks as bad as it does because of the 24/7 news cycle and having unfettered access to rather disturbing images. This kind of thing has happened tons of times over the course of human history.

Now, if Russia did try a Soviet style takeover of former Soviet states then that's a whole other kettle of fish. This though, is nothing more then a territorial skirmish that has been brewing for over a decade.

Not really about the subject, but we have about a million Russian immigrants here. In my city you can hardly walk on the street without hearing Russian. And in my building it's becoming more and more Russian. Some of these people don't even speak Hebrew. My city is called Rishon Le-Zion, but my dad always calls it Russian Le-Zion.
It's hard to be blonde with green eyes in Israel, because so many people start talking to you Russian. It's got to the point where I'm not being asked anymore if I speak Russian, but if I speak Hebrew.
