I think the whole "serve in the army" thing is stupid. You can join the army, but you can't own a handgun until 21 in most states. You can join the army, but can't rent a car. As I understand it, the drinking age was established to keep it out of high schools. How anyone could disagree with this is beyond me.

Frankly, if you're 18 and can't get alcohol, you don't deserve any alcohol.
The main reason I say this is because you are considered an adult in most states when you are 18. You should be able to rent a car, but that's the way it is. I guess we could change that too!

Well, you may not be able to own a handgun, but that doesn't stop me from using one, LOL.

In most states, you are considered an adult at 18. You should be able to drink as well IMO. Also, the legal drinking age used to be 18 in many states before the ever-growing federal government decided to force states to make it 21 or face federal funds being taken away from their state.

Nonetheless, I don't drink (not to say I won't some day, but I haven't really felt the need to honestly) but I still think it should be 18. I'll probably drink sometime, but you can save a whole lot of money by never drinking and keeping some of those hangovers away as well. It doesn't help that my grandfather pretty much drank himself to death a few years ago.

Wow, your cousin must have been really smart to go at 14!

Thanks for the history lesson old man.

Go look up the drunk driving deaths the few years before and the year or two after the act, and then watch the drop off up until today.

Anyone who isn't a high schooler who wants high schoolers to have easy access to alcohol might as well target the automatic weapons ban and give all criminals a free pass back into society. It's easier to avoid gangsters with AKs than high schoolers with 75 mile per hour missiles.

I support lowering the drinking age to eighteen, but either way, I'll continue to drink...and the vast majority of America's youth will do the same.

Drinking age being 21 wouldn't stop you from drinking either.

That has nothing to do with what I quoted.

You said if you can go to college and join the military you should be able to drink. I was just pointing out that if that's the case, you'd have to lower it to 17, because you can do both at that age.

It used to be 18 in many states, anyways, before they started federalizing it.

I don't think it's that hard for high schoolers to get alcohol, maybe it's just because I go to the biggest, or one of the biggest high schools in ohio.

It doesn't matter how big the school is, my school has 80-90 a class and it's the same.

Lowering the age to 18 would be best.

Re: College Presidents Want Drinking Age Lowered...

Lowering the age would probably be ideal if you buy into the "make everything illegal and the appeal will be gone" argument. Regardless, I think it's stupid to even do so. Kids are still gonna drink, they're gonna find beer and harder alcohol and such. There's already an almost epidemic problem of college age students drinking themselves to death (over consumption, fatal accidents) that lowering the age might have the opposite affect and cause even MORE problems.

I'd love to see a study that tries to find out if most college age kids within the past oh, 20 years have ended up with alcoholism/substance abuse problems because some of the stuff that goes on is pretty wacked out.

                      That's just my take.

I think that if kids were allowed to legally drink at a younger age then they would learn how to deal with being drunk, or avoiding it altogether, at a younger age. That would benefit them when it comes to making bad decisions.

I look at places like Spain, where kids are drinking wine by the age of 16, and they can not even drive until they are about 18. To me, that just makes so much more sense. Learn how to drink and then learn how to drive.

In this country, we teach kids how to drive before they even know how to handle their drinking.

Exactly. Me and my friends could've gotten it every weekend and sometimes did. Hell, in the week leading up to when I got caught, that night was the 4th in 7 days that we drank. It's really not hard at all as long as you have money.

I think we should have a more relaxed and responsible outlook towards alcohol like Europe. They don't really have drinking ages and kids learn to drink responsibly and not out of control. Then you avoid the idiots who try and do 21 shots on their 21st, etc.

I know this'll never happen here, and even if they lowered the age I doubt a lot of parents are smart enough and willing to teach their kids about drinking safely, but in a perfect world it'd work.
