Drinking is fun, no doubt about that. But in someways I just sort of wish I had never started. First of all...Bars are expensive and after your 21st birthday when everyone is buying you shots...it's all downhill. Also, I freaking smoke like a chimney when I drink. Nicotine+tobacco FTW. Here is a lesson for you kids...smoking a cigarette when you are drunk will make you feel unstoppably awesome. There is no doubt about that one, but smoking really is bad for you and I should probably try to stay away from it...luckily I don't smoke cigarettes any other time. I was so freaking young and stupid when I was 18 that I don't know how I would have been able to handle the extra freedom of being able to buy alcohol whenever I wanted. At least when you are underage it isn't immediately available for you to buy in a store so it would slow you down a little bit.

The same thing happens to me, but not with cigarettes. I almost always smoke at least 1 cigar when I go to parties, which is weird because I hate smoking and am really against it normally.

That's a good thing JJ. I hear that Wood County (Where BGSU is) has one of the highest rates of STDs per capita (big words) in Ohio. Stay away from the skanks, even though they look pretty good up there.

Holy Wall of Text! This was quite a Ramble Herb. One note that I did quit smoking about 3 weeks ago. At first it was hard to go to a sports bar and drink and not smoke, as they do go hand in hand when you smoke.

Eventually though I got used to it. I feel so much better now.

This might just be the best thread I have ever created in the History of my being at OS.

I can see the binge drinking numbers going down theory. Once I turned 21 I didn't nearly drink as heavily or as much as I did before. I drink more frequently, but on a much smaller ammount scale.

Thank you. This has been happening in every thread with a controversial issue.I'm 19 years old and think that the drinking age should be the same. I almost got in a wreck this morning, because some idiot decided not to slow down, so I had to swerve into the middle lane so I wouldn't get killed today. 18 year old's can't handle alcohol. I also think that there should be a smoking age, like 21 also.

That has nothing to do with the drinking age being raised or lowered.

Unless it was an underage kid drunk behind the wheel in the morning?

That first part was besides the point. But yeah, I do think that the age should stay the same. But, they'll find a way to change it anyway.

I think there needs to be one age (black and white) in which you go from being a child or teen to an adult. Once you reach that age, all of the adult "privleges" are available.

R Movie - 17 or with a parent

Vote - 18
Get Married - 18 unless consent in most states
Join Millitary - 18 unless consent

Just kind of funny that at 18 you can waste away your lungs on smokes, but can't waste your money at a black jack table in Vegas. Or at 18 you can vote for the leader of our nation, but can't drink a beer or you can make one of the most financially important decisions (marriage) of your life, but then afterwards, you can't drink champagne at the toast.

If you are an adult at 18, then IMO you should be given all adult "privleges"

Whether your 18 or 38 the first time you have a beer, your bodies reaction is likely going to be similar. Like any substance, the more you do it, the more your body will become tollerable. I'm sure there are 18 year old high school seniors around the country that can hold their liquor better than most.

There's a reason you typically go through 2 years of college prior to being able to legally drink alcohol. You grow up in college. I drank a lot during freshman year. Fall semester that year is a blur and I can't imagine how bad it would've been to be able to buy it at anytime(probably would've been drinking every night that semester). Sophomore year I drank less. Junior year even less. As you go through college, you realize you don't have to get drunk everytime you drink and you don't have to drink every night at every party.

The sooner you're allowed to purchase alcohol, the quicker you abuse it. 25 is too old, 18 is too young. 21 is about right.

It doens't matter if an individual abuses a substance or not. It is their body, it is their right to do as they please...UNTIL...they violate another individuals liberty and freedom.

An individual might use his truck as a weapon. Should we ban trucks on suspicion?

An individual might use his gun to murder an innocent civilian. Should we ban guns?

An individual might abuse over-the-counter meds and get behind the wheel and mow down a family of four. Should we ban meds?

You punish the criminal for actually committing the crime, not because they might commit the crime.

And Libya, Iran, Iraq, and North Korea might just want a nuclear weapon just to play with.

If we didn't have by far the biggest drug market on the planet, a ton of guns already, and an unsecured border with a third world country, I'd be all for getting rid of guns.

But fax is, 16,000 people are dying a year from drunk drivers, and that's the low end of numbers. I think a fair common sense compromise would be installing breathalyser starters into every vehicle, lowering the drinking age, and making drunk driving murders a death penalty offense.
