Thanks for the history lesson old man.

Go look up the drunk driving deaths the few years before and the year or two after the act, and then watch the drop off up until today.

Anyone who isn't a high schooler who wants high schoolers to have easy access to alcohol might as well target the automatic weapons ban and give all criminals a free pass back into society. It's easier to avoid gangsters with AKs than high schoolers with 75 mile per hour missiles.

Wouldn't it be more reasonable to look at drunk driving accidents than deaths though from year to year after the act. Mostly because part of the drop off of drunk driving deaths could be attributed to better made vehicles now(airbags etc.). I tried to search the net for year by year accidents and couldn't find anything.

I guess I can kind of see where the college presidents are coming from. Some of you have made great points.

Personally, I think it should be lowered. I don't think that there would be necessarily more injuries/deaths/general maladies, but I think in the short term, they'd have to police DUIs harder.

At the age of eighteen you are considered a legal adult, and as a legal adult, I should have the right to put whatever substance into my body that I so choose. The moment I abuse said substance and violate another inidvidual's rights, I should be punished...until then, I find it laughable that someone would support punishment on an incident that hasn't even occured.

The vast majority of those who support keeping the age at 21 do so for a few reasons: To keep alcohol out of High Schools, and to keep the less-mature away from it --as they might get involved in illegal activities. However, the problem with this rationale is that punishing a group of individuals for a crime that hasn't been committed is against all logical sense.

You cannot ban a substance because you think an individual might be too immature to handle it. If we banned everything because of preconceptions, nothing in this country would be legal.

"He might give his high school buddies alcohol, ban alcohol until it's likely he won't be hanging out with HS kids any longer."
"He might stab someone, ban the knives."
"He might rape a woman, remove male genitalia at birth."

Do you not see the problem with this rationale? You're punishing legal adults under the age of 21 because you think they might do something illegal. The correct thing to do would be to wait until an actual incident occurs before you go ahead and implement punishment.

I blame the Christians! Temperance movements are a big part of Uh-merica, many a book on this. Dry counties prohibit adults from buying alcohol. Liquor licenses dictate where and when alcohol can be purchased. In Ohio we cannot buy alcohol on Sunday until after 1:00pm at grocery stores. No secret why that is.

Anyway I think all of this is entirely stupid, just like every other drug law we have. At least one high school kid dies each year around my area because they drink out in the country and drive around because they can't go to a bar, they can't go to a friends house with parents around and drink otherwise the parents will get sued.

Anyway I agree completely that the drinking age should be lowered, then abolished.

The whole law is ridiculous...fining legal adults for drinking alcohol and not bothering anybody, what a novel concept.
