I'm seeing a lot of hoppy lagers, black lagers, IPL, red lagers, etc on shelves and in bars and breweries these days.

IPA and hop heavy ales have had their popularity lately but I think these enhanced lagers are the next wave.

I'm still riding the hop wave though and picked up a six of this:

        And four of this:

Ipa's and hefeweizen's are good summer beers. Also look into Duvel, very good pale ale.

A lot of people like the Summer Shandy. I'm not a fan but can see why. I'd disagree with Phobia... I personally like a good IPA any time, but wouldn't generally say they are good summer beers. I feel like summer beers should be thirst quenching and IPAs should be savored.

What about those breweries putting out "Session" IPAs?

A good IPA to me with the floral, citrus, and piney notes just screams summer to me. Nothing like sitting in the backyard sweating buck shot BBQing while sipping a good Stone Ruination, thats summer to me.

Where winter is pure heavy stouts like a good oatmeal stout or Rasputin's coffee toffee notes.

Now I also seperate session brews vs my "purpose" brews. If im spending $12 on a 4 pack it will be 7% or higher, normally closer to the 8%. Im drinking them both for the quality taste but also paying for the buzz. If i know its a all day drink like tail gating then yea i'll go 4 to 5% abv.

Now with that said for me, a perfect beer is high abv, so a sixer is perfect to get a nice strong buzz from. Sweet weak beers are typically not my thing.

Every IPA can be considered a session IPA if you drink enough of them in one sitting.

I pretty much agree with you too, but I know I'm not the average beer drinker. I'd never look for a "summer" beer, personally. And I will admit, if it's 90 degrees and I'm at a beach or park, I'll probably go away from IPAs or limit to only one.

Picked up some Brooklyn Summer Ale this weekend. Only time I had it before was when I was in New York a couple years ago, and I remember really liking it.

It hasn't disappointed. I saw someone earlier ask about a good summer beer, and this would be it. Unfortunately, the liquor store near my house doesn't carry it, otherwise I'd probably make this my go-to all summer.
