So... What's the difference between buying say a 60 dollar meal, or spending 60 dollars at a BJ table which would probably last an hour?

Both things lasted an hour, and you have nothing left to show for it when you are done (unless you won money on the BJ table)

When I go to Vegas (haven't been since I turned 21), I'll only feel poker because it's the game I feel most comfortable in. I'd rather play the players than play the dealer/house.

        Re: Casinos & Gambling

A lot of gambling misconceptions in this thread. Simply put poker is the only game in the casino you can play where you can have an edge and win in the long run, period. The long run being hundreds, if not thousands of hours, not a few trips to the Bellagio on a trip to Vegas. And that is if you know how to play and play well. Because you're playing against other players, who make mistakes that you can take advantage of and not against the house. The house simply provides dealers and takes $5 out of the pot for the use of their facilities, etc.

That said you obviously are new to not just poker but any gambling, so I'd say more important than trying to figure out which game you can win at is just set some money aside, don't spend more than that on the trip and have fun, since its unlikely you'll have time to really learn poker. Figure out the basics of blackjack or something and stick to the dollar tables is my best advice, or buy in at 2/4 limit hold em at any casino and play tight and keep the drinks coming. You're 40 dollar buy in can last hours even for the total novice.

But no game has a statistical edge, even playing perfect blackjack strategy (not counting cards) you're a 49% to 51% dog to the house. As far as those who tell you tricks about winning on the slots of video poker, they are full of it. Video poker or craps etc are simple, the casino pays out less than your odds of hitting and ultimately makes money in the long run. Most slots pay out around 90% of the winnings, keeping only 10% to the casino, which in the long run is huge amount. Video poker for example pays out lets say 1000 to 1 for hitting a Royal Flush, where as its mid 500, 000 to 1 to hit that hand in real life, meaning you're severely being undercut from the odds.

Have fun, don't go crazy, don't expect to win.

Wow, no, completely false. As I mentioned in my post above about video poker, you're paid far less than what the true statistical chance of making your hand is.

Example, you're dealt 5 random cards in video draw poker, no pairs, you hold the A, K and Q, meaning you draw for 2 more cards only. In this scenario you have about a 20% chance of hitting a pair (one of the remaining 3 Aces, 3 Kings or 3 Queens, 9 cards available of the remaining 47 unknown cards) which would pay you say 3:1 on your money (most video poker will pay only pairs of jacks or higher). So although you only have a 1 in 5 chance of hitting your card the casino will only pay you 3:1 if you do, meaning everytime you win you're only getting 60% of the value of the money you gambled with.

Thats like flipping a coin and betting a dollar but only winning 60 cents when you win, and losing the dollar when you lose. In the long run your opponent will win big.

Apperantly you didn't read my post.

I'm not talking about video game poker as whole, just the double up feature/bet. It pays even money, same as taking the odds in craps. Again the only two bets where the casino has no edge. I guess instead of places, I should have said bets.

Poker (not video poker) is different, you are not playing against the casino, your playing against your opponent. And honsestly, I consider it much more of a skill game than a gambling game, that is unless you can take 100% of your emotion out of it and strictly play by the book and play the %'s. You can have the best or worst hand and win or have the best or worst hand and lose. The fact is, so much more goes into being a successful poker player than just playing your cards. You have to play your stack, your position and your opponents, which goes way beyond your basic black jack or craps table. So much of your winnings are dependent upon your opponent (the size of his stack, his cards, his position, etc.) as much as they are on you. Stastically (in a vaccuum), in poker, your odds are the same as everyone elses, which means in a limitless game, you would be expected to break even minus your ante to casino.

Betting the pass line in craps = the best odds of any bet in the casino.

My personal favorite is blackjack especially when you have a fun dealer who's really into it.

I don't have the spare cash to play craps but hopefully I can get into it down the line.

                    This

If you are short on cash, make your way to the sports book and do some small bets on horse racing and let the drinks flow.

Bet on sports and fights. I was there for the Paquiao fight, bet 300 total, put 100 on paquiao ko in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I got 22/1 on that. Big time!!

I also bet on playoff games, but I lost almost all of them. It was also the same weekend the Kentucky derby and I close to a guy who bet 2k on Mine That Bird. Guy went nuts. Being in a sports book is a real cool atmosphere. It's a good afternoon hang out watching different sports. I like the Wynn's and the Mirage's sportsbook.

At night, you have to hit up a club, there is just too many hot chicks around to miss out. I was just at Club Jet in the Mirage. Awesome club, others are Tao (asian chick hang out), Pure at Ceasars. No matter what place you'll get a great dj spinning. You'll have a good time. If you go, make sure you bring a chick with you so that it'll be easier for you to get in.

                              I considered that a win.
