Is there a way to test pickups without installing them in your guitar?

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
As far as pedal order goes, what is the general rule or guideline to follow? I was given a wah pedal and a fuzz pedal this morning and was wondering what their order should be with the delay pedal I already have.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I finally set up all my pedals last night. I initially set up them going Wah -> Fuzz -> Delay. I couldn't any noticable wah effect with fuzz on, so I switched my Fuzz and Wah. We'll see how it goes. Its been awhile since I played with my delay pedal, so it should be fun experimenting with them all.
As much fun as the Wah pedal can be (I'm finding it difficult to get used to), the fuzz pedal just blows me out of the water. From sludgy stoner rock to 60s era blue-fuzz, the effects are amazing, but the boost this thing gives is phenomenal. It sounds like its doubling the signal its that much of a boost.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I feel like I'm using my wah pedal wrong, like I don't know if there's a certain technique to how hard and how fast you press I just got up and down basically.
I just got the TS 808 tube screamer and it puts out some serious blues tones, absolutely love it.1905 1921 1922 1933 1954 2010 2012

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
To me, the trick is to time your pedal movements with the notes you are playing to get the most dramatic effect. When playing fast passages, sometimes just keeping a steady slow rythym to it can make the simplest of riffs sound amazing. You can use it when playing chords, basic power chords and backing progressions, but the solos are where the wah is intended to shine.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I'm picking up a used Acoustic guitar off of one of my buddies Wednesday. My 2012 goal is to learn how to play the guitar, so actually owning one is a big step. HA.
Anyway, do you guys have advice for beginners?
My friends that play have given me some but I was looking for non-biased opinions about what I want to do. My music of style that I would like to play would be weird Jack White/Raconteurs type stuff but also I like the Metal (Metallica, Trivium, The Sword). Ideas?Comment

By far the best source for beginners/intermediates. Not only does it teach you the guitar and train your ear to hear, but he also provides you a structure that you can use and change for you as long as you need it. Plus, he has a lot "learn to play" such and such song on there, two of them being In The Cold Cold Night and Seven Nation Army.
The White Stripes songs, honestly, are not all that difficult to play. A lot of the riffs I've learned I honestly could have learned my first month or so of playing the guitar. There are a lot of good things to take away from him and a lot of his licks and riffs are incredibly awesome, but pretty simplistic. There's an awesome tab site for all of the White Stripes songs called Broken Bricks. The guy who did the tabs actually has his own group now that I saw last Spring (didn't know it was the guy at the time) called The Americans. Kind of in the same style as the White Stripes.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Hey OS Guitarists, I'm looking to sell my Charvel Jackson Model 5A guitar that my parents bought me brand new way back in the mid/late-80s. I have no idea what it is worth though. I played this guitar for about 8 years, still in great condition and I have a hard case for it. Not sure if it has the Kahler or Floyd whammy though. The pic I've attached isn't my guitar but it is exactly like it, color and all. Any help on what it's worth today? Thanks.
Wiki's description of the Model 5A:
Model 5
The Model 5 was neck-through guitar very similar to the USA Jackson SL-2 Soloist. It featured thin profile 25.5" scale maple neck and poplar body, rosewood fingerboard with jumbo frets, and mother of pearl dot inlays. In early 1986 the guitar was offered with a Kahler 2300 series Pro tremolo with steel roller saddles, as well as Jackson J80C pickups with an active mid-boost control. Other controls include master volume and tone controls, as well as a five way switch which offered coil tapping. By late 1986 the Model 5 was redesigned with a Kahler 2315 Standard series tremolo with brass roller saddles. Larger pickup covers appeared by late 1986. After 1986, the Kahler was replaced with a non-recessed, licensed Jackson JT-6 tremolo that was similar to a Floyd Rose. The color options for this guitar were cobalt blue, red, black cherry, pearl white, and black. The Model 5 is one of the rarer Charvel imports.
Model 5A
Identical to the Model 5, but fitted with a single humbucker in the bridge position and equipped with a single volume control and no tone control.Last edited by aukevin; 02-13-2012, 10:19 AM.
