Re: Dress Code @ Morehouse College. What Do You Think About This?

They're of course free to set their own policies as a private institution... however, all of these leave a bad taste in my mouth, mainly the mention of do rags specifically as well as the "traditionally female clothing" bit because it's pretty clear targeting. The only one I can see is the sunglasses in classes since your eyes can be everywhere and anywhere (during tests for example) and you could probably sleep with them on and not have anyone notice.

I understand the argument about distractions, but if that's the case, ban low-cut tops and booty shorts for the women (I know this one is an all-male college, just a general point)... I've spent far more time looking at those thing in classes than reading the obscene shirt of the guy next to me. Not serious, but y'know... that one in particular is a shallow argument for dress codes.

EDIT: Agreed with Aholbert re: that comment as well... college /= work

You really think they know how to dress ??? Please,,,,,,,,I lost count the number of times I had interviewed fresh out of college black kids who didn't know how to dress for interviews. Got to the point it was so bad, that I literally started holding seminars at the colleges in this area for seniors teaching them how to dress for interviews when they graduate college.

Sure you would think it is a no brainer. But if you were allowed to dress that way your whole life and never had anybody teach you how to dress differently for certain situations then hell you wouldn't know.

I do. I went to a black undergrad and a black law school. I have plenty of black friends who have jobs. I have plenty of black friends who I've seen go to interviews and dress appropriately. I've interviewed hundreds of blacks for legal jobs and internships and NEVER seen one come to an interview in anything less than a suit.

At Clark, they had guidance programs and classes on how to prepare for interviews. Most schools have them. So it is a no brainer. If someone doesnt wear a suit (or at least presentable) to an interview it has nothing to do with race or culture or them not knowing how to dress for an interview. It's either they cant afford a decent suit or they simply dont give a ****.

Plus your point was that students should dress "appropriately" on campus. Why start at college? Lets have high schoolers wear suits to class? Might as well start early since they arent intelligent enough to know what is appropriate for a job interview.

I wear jeans and boots samn near every weekend but I know to wear a suit or a blazer at my job. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that.

Cuturally certain attire is frowned upon as a youth as you get older your taste should change its a natural progression... I dont buy as many sneakers as I did in college cause I wear more dress slacks etc... Its a known fact that many clubs have dress codes primarily to keep a element out but even more so because people are less likely to act a fool in thier "good" clothes. Point being in this case Morehouse has the right to make this call just as any private university has the right to change thier student policies.

Re: Dress Code @ Morehouse College. What Do You Think About This?

Nobody said they weren't intelligent enough. And actually in Chicago some high schools already have a dress code having males wear button up shirts and khakis.

To me I all for it. Start them off early for they can get into the habit of wearing dress clothes. That way when they do graduate college, wearing dress clothes won't seem so foreign to them.

Because I know when I graduated college, 5 of my friends never wore a dress shirt, slacks or a tie in their life. So therefore I know there are a lot of black kids in the world who have the same situation.

Just because you and I and others know how to dress for certain situations, don't mean every black male know how to. I mean if it is just for a store job, you really should dress up.

I have seen many college kids who said oh I am going on this interview at Walmart and they wearing some saggin blue jeans with some timberland boots.

Or at office jobs, black males will walk in there with their dress pants saggin and shirt hanging outside of their pants. And I tell them all the time pull up the pants and tuck in the shirt.

It would be nice if every college had a how to dress for interview class for seniors. I know some do, but a lot of colleges don't.

As far as styles changing when you grow older, it really should. Nothing sadder then seeing a 48 yr old man pants saggin with grey corn rolls in his head saying wat it do man.

All true but not just problematic of one culture its more lower class folks from multiple races who only dress up for big events or church if then... I notice my ex wife's nephews from worst part of New Orleans like to get "clean" because it impresses a certain type of woman but if you fisihing for hood rats a over sized white tee and some sagging jeans and the newest kicks will get you play all day...I mean I even if I am rocking jeans I rock a button up... unless its just super hot outside but I am fishing in a whole other body of water.

It's a private school and they can do what they want, but I still don't like it on principle. And FWIW, I don't wear anything that would get me in trouble under this code.

I just dont like the fact you are singling out blacks as if its a race related thing when its not. Its not a culture thinge either. Those black kids who dress down for an interview at Walmart are doing that not because they dont know any better but because they arent interviewing with Walmart and dont give a ****. Other races do that also. They recognize that they arent going to have a career at Walmart and dont give a ****.

Also, I find it hard to believe that many 21 yr old black males have never worn a dress shirt. Most 21 yr olds I know have been to church where at many its damn near a requirement. BigTig made a great point too about clubs. There isnt a major club in DC that a black male could get into with out wearing a dress shirt or dress pants. Same w/ Atlanta.
