Sick and Tired of the 9 to 5...

I know that we all have to work and I have no problem doing that, but I just loathe my job. I work as an accountant and the pay is good, but I just hate what I do. It seems like all I do is work. When I get off, traffic is a b*tch and I get home around 7-7:30; just in time to eat, shower and go right to bed. Repeat. On the weekends, I'm so beat that all I really do is chill at the house and watch games all day (not bad at all, btw) or maybe go out to dinner with my gf.

I really would like the opportunity to do something that I love and that gives me time for other things... Basketball. I have had this idea of either starting a basketball camp (12-18yr olds) or a city-wide league for working professionals. This would give me the chance to do something that I truly love to do. The only thing that holds me back is the state of the economy. It really hard to trade in a stable and steady lifestyle for the unknown.

    Any good advice out there?

I would start working on the basketball camp/adult league idea on the side after work and on weekends and if it takes off, you can go from there.

I've always thought a well-done adult basketball league would do really well. I think there are a lot of dudes who want a bit more than just bumping at the YMCA. Hire some quality refs, get decent facilities, get some local journalism students who want experience to shoot video and produce a nice website, keep stats, offer a nice cash prize to the winners. Maybe I'm way off but that just seems like it would be received well.

Who came up with 5 days or work and 2 days of play? Why not 4/3?

Regardless, my 9-5 is actually 8-5 with an hour lunch. But my 8-5 is really a 7:15-6:00 due to commute/traffic...basically 11 hours. I'm in bed by 10:30/11:00, so by the time dinner is cooked, eaten and cleaned up, my daughter is bathed, entertained and put to bed, I still have 2+ hours every night for me/me and my wife...not too bad considering some of the alternatives.

In retrospect, of course things can be a lot worse, I'm just frustrated with where I'm at I guess. I think a 4/3 setup would help out a great deal lol.

If you only work four days a week you would not make as much money as you do for fives days a week. I love my job and my hours are 8 to 3 pm Mon to Fri. And I am contracted to work 180 days a year. And I only comute 15 minutes each way. Plus I work 4 weeks off 1 week and that is like that the whole year. Plus a make pretty good money for a teacher. I will do this job for awhile. You can't beat the hours and I make about 70 grand a year, but I have two masters and I work the summer, but with having the 4 weeks work schedule and off the next week. I don't mine working the summer, but I get paid extra for working the summer. It is a win win situation for me.

that's not a bad idea but it's going to be about 10x the amount of work you think it would be.

as for the 9-to-5, I swear I'll never have a job like that. I couldn't stand it. If you hate what you do you're going to be angry about 75% of the time.

Re: Sick and Tired of the 9 to 5...

                      I'd love to have a 9-5 M-F job.

                      My work schedule this week:

                      Wednesday: 2-10:30p
                      Thursday: 7:30a-4p
                      Friday: Off
                      Saturday: 1p-10:30p
                      Sunday: 1p-10:30p
                      Monday: Off
                      Tuesday: 12p-6p

Every week it's different. I don't know my schedule more than a week in advance. I work two out of every three weekends. At least once a week I'll work a late shift followed by an early shift the next day. And I have a 35 minute drive to/from work. It's really hard to make plans, and rarely see my friends and family because they're not fans of how my plans are always last-minute.

All that being said, I'm not really complaining. I'm just happy to have a job that pays enough to live comfortably. It could be worse. I'd just like a job with a set schedule someday(it doesn't even need to be 9-5, just something set in stone)

He is a cook and maid.. I mean a firefighter. Right Knight? I like my job. It is not easy teaching murderers and rapists, but once you get them in a control environment they really are good kids. A lot of times it is their up bringing that made them go bad! At least in my opinion, sure there are other reasons too. That is why I tell people in High School to figure out what you want to do and figure out what it will take to make that happen.

Yeah, I've never had a regular 9-5 in my life. The last two schedules at my 2 previous jobs were as follows:

                              Su - 12-9:30pm
                              M - 11:15am-9:30pm
                              Tu - Off
                              W - Off
                              Th -11:15am-9:30pm
                              F - 12 - 9:30pm
                              Sa -11:15am-9:30pm

True enough I got off at 9:30...but that's strictly what my SCHEDULED time off was. Since I worked at the airport, it was nothing for me to stay after 12am some days...once I even had to stay past 2am!

My last job was a little more in stone:

                              Su -Off
                              M - 9am-7pm
                              Tu -11am-8pm
                              W - 9am-6pm
                              Th -11am-8pm

Fridays and Saturdays alternated every week...
                              F - Off/8am-4pm
                              Sa -Off/8am-3pm

The only problem with this was on Fridays; it sucked getting up for work because it was a 2 hour commute, so when I got home, I would barely have time to eat, sleep and be up the following day extra early. Working on Saturday wasn't a big deal, but who wants to wake up at 5am on a Saturday?
