That's kind of how mine is. 8-5:30 M-F, but I'm usually in the office around 7am and don't leave until 6:30 or 7:00pm. Once I get home, I usually have 2-3 hours to relax and enjoy TV with the wife...and that's assuming work doesn't call my Blackberry (which happens about once a week) or email me with questions (probably 2-3 times a week, but responding to email at night on a BlackBerry isn't that bad...it does get annoying when busy though). Then we have on call rotations for weekend support. I'm on call every 3rd weekend....might as well make it every other weekend as we have 1 Junior Engineer who is on call the 3rd of the 3 weekends and he struggles at times and relies on myself and the other Sr. Engineer to help him. Add in the 2 Monthly network/server patching outages (those days are 8am-11pm....I have one this Wednesday) and work can really get frustrating at times.

There are many worse alternatives - such as being unemployed. I understand the OP's frustration because work can get tiresome and mundane, but think of some of the alternatives. I put in a lot of hours per week for work (probably 70 hours total most weeks when their isn't an outage - I don't bother calculating it anymore because it gets depressing), but thinking of the alternatives keeps me going. That and the goal of retiring as soon as possible!

I had the 8-5 and HATED it!!! If you make a lot of money that would be fine...but to not get compensated for the misery? No thanks

i feel you bro...thats why im working on my plan to not have to work this 9 to 5... its not the 9 to 5 that bothers me so much.... more so that i feel like im wasting my time by doing something that is irrelevant to me in my life.

im soaking up game right now in roder to change all that...

just do whatever it is you feel will make you happier...but dont talk yourself out of doing it by making excuses...be SMART about your decisoins...but just DO IT.

stop talking about it...and DO IT

Although I have a job that is difficult and frustrating at times, I would not trade being a teacher for anything in the world. I have been teaching for six years now, and in those six years I have never felt like I made the wrong decision as far as a career. It is especially rewarding now that I have a daughter and have all summer to spend with her.

I hear what you are saying, but I guess it depends on the job and whether you are hourly or salaried. I'm a salaried employee and it is pretty much understood that I am paid for the work I do, not how long it takes me. Unfortunately with that comes the fact that if I have nothing to do, I am supposed to be there in case anything comes up, but I can show show up late and leave early for the minorist of things with no questions asked. 8-5 are the "reccomended" hours, but everyone bends the rules.

When gas prices were over $4 and the ecomonmy was headed in the toilet we were allowed to vary our schedule to four ten hour days or eight 9 hour days with every Friday off. We also get to work from once a week or whenever is needed (cable guy, UPS delivery, etc.).

I understand my situation is pretty cush compared to others, but man it'd be nice to have a three day weekend every week.

I've never had a 9-5 job but right now I'd be real happy to switch to that schedule. Mine right now is...

                  Saturday: 6a-10:00p
                  Sunday: 6a-10:00p
                  Monday: 2-10p
                  Tuesday: Off
                  Wednesday: Off
                  Thursday: 2:00-9p
                  Friday: 2-10p or 6a-2p

My weekends are horrible right now but I feel fortunate to have a job so I can't complain too much.

Re: Sick and Tired of the 9 to 5...

It's always interesting to see the varied responses as we are all different. I work 8-5 with an hour lunch that allows me to go to the gym. I love my job, my schedule and could never work another schedule like 2nd or 3rd shift.

I am a morning person so getting up is never an issue. I don't miss anything during the day by working, except for Champions League or other footy matches, but I always have the stream going at work. After work I can hang with my wife, watch TV programs/sporting events, game, go out, etc. If I want to stay up late it won't really bother me as I am always busy and never bored at work. I don't do that often anymore, but it is nice to have the option.

I like structure so that is another big reason I love my schedule and knowing that it never changes. At times I may have to stay later at work when issues occur, but no big deal. Alot of times I have to think about what day it is, which I something I was never able to do before my current job. That's how little I mind getting up and going to work everyday. In the past with jobs I dreaded, I always knew what day it was and how long I had to go until the weekend.

I'm happy I work 8 hours instead of 9. I get to eat whenever I want and take breaks and I don't have to spend that extra hour for "lunch". An extra hour a day is HUGE

                          I work 5-3:30 Mon-Thurs. I can't complain, home early, 3 day weekends, and I'm a morning person anyway.

Used to work 8-4. Now I have been switched 9-5. Hate it. Subway is so damn crowded at 5.

Now if I could get paid for the OT, all the extra hours would be worth it.

                                The schedule is great.
The amount of times I have to go in each week cannot be beat.(and going in is so much fun it should be outlawed)
The amount of vacation time rivals teachers.(that's from years of not taking raises during budget crunches...instead accepting more vacation time...now people(city govt.) try and hold that against us...unbelievable)
