Re: Sick and Tired of the 9 to 5...

I don't think I actually know of anyone who actually works 9-5.

I'm usually at work by 7:30 and lucky to leave by 5 usually closer to 6.

Sure, they have small homes, don't drive fancy cars and will never own $400 hand bags.
But they're happy. What's up with that??
      Really? THey don't?

Re: Sick and Tired of the 9 to 5...

When I got out of college in '06 I was living with my parents in New Hampshire and took a job in Boston (economics degree, not many jobs in that field in NH). My commute was brutal. I left the house at quarter of 6 for a 9-6 job (hour of unpaid lunch) and got home between 8 and 8:30. I was dead tired by 9:30 so my weekdays were all work and no play. Weekends were spent recovering. My hours eventually changed to 8-5ish, which was a little better (in the summer I was able to get home by 7) but still pretty awful. Eventually I had to move to the city and though my expenses went up, I was no longer running my car into the ground and could leave my apartment at 8:30 (ironically, once I moved closer to the city my hours changed from 10-7 which would have been much better for a commuter).

Now I work for Citigroup and have a standard 9-5 job with a good salary. Problem is, for anyone that hasn't paid even the slightest bit of attention to the economic situation, the company is doing terrible and my job security sucks right now (they've recently started out-sourcing some of my stuff to India and I've been asked multiple times over the past few months to detail my exact workload, 11 people were laid off yesterday in an office of only 100 or so people). I recently moved in with family in the area because my lease was up and I want to buy a house, so I had no interest in signing another year long lease. With my job security though I'm really nervous about doing anything because if I take out a mortgage and then get laid off I'd potentially have to declare bankruptcy, absolutely ruining my excellent credit score, as getting another job in the financial industry isn't an easy thing right now. My life is basically on hold.

So yeah, 9-5 can be a drag and the fact that we as a country (US) work 5 days a week depresses the Hell out of me sometimes, but its still better than being unemployed or facing job uncertainty.

I actually like this 9 to 5. I was used to 9 to 6 and sometimes 12pm to...midnight...? 9 to 5 is cool, especially here when I pick my wife up on the way home and get home usually around 5:40-5:45. I guess it'll take longer once the CRAZY winter starts, but we'll see...

It's alarming how many people are miserable with their jobs and are only doing it because their livelihood depends on it. A lot of you guys only get an hour, maybe two to spend with your family before bed after a ridiculously long work day.

What choices do we really have? Resign and then what? If you applied somewhere else you'd look like an *** for resigning so it will probably be tough to get hired. Or if you just happened to have 10-20K saved up you could go into business. I'm not that fortunate at the moment.

Yeah, I hear ya. It seems like everyone is trapped where they are because they don't have the time, money, etc to find something better. It's just very sad. It shouldn't be like that, but it is.

That's why I'm happy with a 9-5 job. I used to work at jobs that demanded TONS of extra hours (and the basis was 9 hours a day)...and it's not worth it. You know what? I prefer doing something that's not ideal for me on a 9-5 basis, than something I LOVE but that would demand more hours. 9-5 & 5 days a week is enough. I wouldn't switch to another job with more money and more hours...unless I'm broke or god knows what. I have friends who make 1.5-2 times what I make. They work at hi-thech companies from 8 am to 9-10 pm. And sometimes even 6 days a week. Yeah, good money, but they hardly have time to do something or enjoy life. They'll probably save more money for pension - which is good, but suddenly they're 60 and feel like: "Where the hell is all the time gone? What have I been doing all this time?"...

It is called reality! Not everybody is going to like their job.

I will say this. A 9-5 M-F is a really good schedule. Especially the older you get. You can spend the weekends with your kids. My schedule is 8-3 and I spend the weekends with my kids. But 9-5 is nothing to laugh out that is a very good schedule in my opinion.

Not matter what your schedule is....if you dont enjoy it or if it's not the the path of something you want why do it.

I understand once kids get in the picture your forced to do things you dont want. But If your only responsible for yourself then why put up with it.

I've said many times before that after 2-3 years at my current job, I'm gone (been there for 1.3 years). There's no way I'm working the long hours at the office and basically only seeing my wife as I crawl into bed for the night. It's not healthy for anyone.

Only reasons I won't leave now? My wife and I are building a house and changing jobs during that time is not a good idea. Also, the company I work for is doing GREAT in this economy. My bonus this past year was 10K. Most companies aren't giving out bonuses or cutting staff and I had the highest bonus I've had in 9 years of work. That's tough to walk away from until this economy rebounds.....which leads me to the third reason I'm not leaving, there's not much out there right now. While the economy is bad, I'll stick with a place that has great job security.

With that said, I'm in the area where I don't hate my job. In fact, I like the people I work with. It's a great group. I just hate the hours and commitment that's expected from Sr. Management. Some of these guys LIVE for their job...they've said it's the first thing they think of every morning and last thing they think of when they go to bed (and I can attest to that as I get emails from some of them first thing in the morning around 6am and last thing at night around 11pm....sometimes I've received emails at 2-3am). It's ridiculous and I often wonder how their wives stand it...although knowing their wives don't work and sit at home all day must be nice. It must also be nicer to live in their million dollar homes and have cleaning people clean the house, take care of the laundry and landscapers to cut the grass and do the landscaping. I feel for their kids though who rarely ever see their fathers.

I will say this once Mike, because you already know. Work now while you are still young and that way you can retire when you are still fairly young. I will retired at around 55. I will have about 20 plus years with the school district. Plus my house is already paid for. So when I sell it I don't owe the bank.

Oh Scott your a Teacher. Thats the best job in the world, done by 3 and 3 months off. Almost stealing.

I'm thinkin of getting a teaching certificate if my job search doesnt improve. I would rather work hard in the investment banking world for 10-15 years and start my own business. But I am seeing the value in teaching/coaching.

I work during the summer. More money and I still I am contracted to work 180 days a year. The thing that is great is I work 4 weeks off one week. And it is like that way the whole year. I am off about 45 days a year. This is including Christmas and other holidays. Teaching is not easy though. You are drain mentality and physically at the end of the day. And getting a credential in California is not easy! But the schedule kicks butt. I am lucky because most teachers have to take work home. I can't becasue of the confidentially of the students. So we have a lot of prep time to get it all done. Plus no parents at all. So it is the best in my opinion.
