Though, like bgeno, I didn't know Rule 3. That list is interesting because if you really read each rule, there are basically only two rules. Rule 1, 2, 3 and 5 are the same thing: two sentences joined together to complete a single thought. Rule 4 is the rule about lists (that Blzer mentioned earlier).

I also don't understand why the need for a Rule 2 and Rule 3. It's the same thing. All the writer had to say is:

"It is preferable to use a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, however, therefore, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., or for instance when they introduce a complete sentence. Use a comma or semicolon when they introduce a list following a complete sentence. It is also preferable to use a comma after the introductory word."
Yeah I notice that too. It is basically her interpretation if you ask me. That is why I laugh about grammar. It changes every day if you ask me. You always have the experts fighting with other experts on what is right and what is wrong.

Seriously, I do. I doubt that anyone can remember every rule of the English language without some help. I always have my Elements of Style book with me when I'm writing. I would expect that an editor always has whatever book or notes he/she may need as well.

It's like Law. No lawyer knows every rule by heart. But, a good lawyer knows where to find the rule and I would expect that good writers know where to correct a potential mistake - that or they hire an editor to do it for them.
      I agree too.

It's not the same thing at all. Rule 2 has a complete sentence after the semicolon and Rule 3 does not.

          That is definately rediculous.

You're right. I didn't finish reading the sentences. Terrible.

I'm no grammar nazi, but I will admit that posts with tons of misspelled words, or blatant grammatical errors (hear vs. here, your/you're, they're/their, etc) drive me batty. It's tough to take someone seriously when they're completely butchering the English language. I'm not perfect, and I know I make grammar mistakes, but at least try and not make these massive ones, you know?

Honestly, who cares? Its just the internet. Its not an English paper or a college essay. As long as your post is readable, I'm all good.

I mean, one can ask why we would ever care, then. What makes a college paper so different? Why should the professor have such grading criteria that requires that as long as it's readable?

Again, I'm not saying that it should be expected or required on here, but what's the harm in typing our language? Can you imagine other languages, like Chinese, going all slang with their symbols on the Internet? That would be messed up for people that are only somewhat fluent and cannot fully comprehend it.

                        Yeah...exactly.

Just tough to take someone seriously when they type this "ZOMG did u here that Harvin's knees broke? Your fantasy team gonna get there *** kicked"

Yeah, I know what the person meant, but it makes me cry a bit inside to realize this is our future.

When Americans became too lazy to type out the word "you" and replaced it with the letter u, all hope was lost.

If it was because of text messaging, I could understand. 160 characters was chosen because most people could get their point across in 160 characters (yes, this was actually studied before the limit was decided).

Most teenagers cannot and cutting words makes sense especially before unlimited text messaging plans.

However, I feel this was going on with emails, even before text messaging hit the mass market.

                                I do.

It shows a degree of pride and care about what you are typing in what takes about the same amount of time. Sorry, just my opinion but like others have said, I just can't take someone seriously if they don't take pride in their writing.

Maybe it's because I only visit one forum so I don't bounce around and see how other forums are.
