    Thoughts?

This also didn't take into account the resources wasted on the dropouts prior to them making the decision, such as wasted financial aid dollars.

One of the things that annoys me most about welfare programs and financial aid are the people who get help from them, with absolutely no desire to improve their situation so that they don't need it anymore. I had this dude on xbox live telling a friend and I how stupid we were for actually working and having jobs while he gets to sit on his *** all day and get paid by the government to do nothing. People like that don't deserve the help they're getting.

I have always thought that the first requirement for Financial Assistance of any form should be a High School diploma or GED.

I don't know about making it a requirement to have one, but I think they should make sure whoever is on it is actually making the attempt to get one if they don't already. Similar to how you have to apply for so many jobs and whatnot when collecting unemployment.

This wont end well, but I'll keep my comments as bland as possible.

You cannot just simply provide money without any requirements from the party receiving them. Some of the problems are with the rules, such as if you get a job, you lose most of your benefits, when the job isn't paying enough so you don't get one because you get more not having a job. Other problems are with the people that just want to be free loaders.

The programs should be designed to give people a hand up, not a handout. I would rather give someone who needs help and is willing to work and doing anything they can to improve them self 2-3 times the amount given to someone who is able to work, but does nothing.

I'll stop there because going any further will get me banned for a while.

Kind of funny this thread was made.....they just had it in the news paper out here the high school graduation rates for Indiana. The highest school had a 86% graduation rate and it was a charter school. 1/3 of the schools were between 70% and 80%

2/3 of the schools were below 60% graduation rate, with some even being below 35%. Those schools tend to have been in the most country parts of Indiana, where there was nothing but farm land around.

There are a lot of things killing the economy.

That said, this thread is being watched---so tread lightly.

All I gotta say is that my parents would have beat the black off of me if I didn't graduate from High school, Much less College. But everyone can't graduate I guess because Someone has to pick up the garbage or cut the grass or bag my groceries.

And the 2nd should be drug testing.

Well, one of the major problems is an education system that is rooted in the belief of a basic education that contains course loads that have no bearing on the reality of the students potential future or aptitude.

Even our brightest students are handicapped by a philosophy that is more about memorization and less about building learning skills. I majored in Education from UT, a long time ago, and as a student teacher knew I couldn't be a teacher based on the things I witnessed and went through.

So I don't fully blame entire groups of "drop outs" as the losers it's so easy to label them as.

                              This.

In Texas at least, teachers teach the students to pass the TAKS test which is a standardized test taken each April.

Going into my 3rd semester of college and I look back and see how pointless most of HS was. I have relearned all of the material in my core classes since colleges make you take stuff all over again.
