Re: Drop Outs are Killing the Economy

Ummmm yeah garabage men make $45,000 a year in most major cities. And lawn people depending on the company they work for, can make $36,000 a year. And finally not EVERYBODY that work at a grocery store or store period are high school or college drop outs.

You got a lot of people with Bachelor degrees that work at Walmart as cashiers. It is the sign of the times, people got to work somewhere. Hell I knew a few people with master degrees bartending or workng in a store as a cashier or waitress because their job got sent over seas when the insurance and banks took a hit.

I agree, so long as one certain drug is off of the list.

Funny you say that, considering those jobs are, and will increasingly become, held by individuals with High School and College degrees.

Having a college degree doesn't guarantee you a fancy job, or even a job at all.

Because the pot smokers are so much worse than the alcohol drinkers (oh, you know, like 80% of college students)?

So true.....so true indeed. Nowadays companies value work experience over college degrees. Having a masters or bachelors degree dont mean nothing at all now if you dont have work experience.

And getting work experience right now is impossible.....even with a Doctorate finding work is impossible right now.

That's mostly because the population as a whole is acquiring degrees.

There are only so many high paying jobs around (and just jobs in a field period). Law students, MBAs and the like can't really expect to get a fancy job just because they have the degree if they acquired it from some tier three school, and this holds 100 times for English, history, and philosophy majors.

Gun to my head, I'd say neither 80% of college students smoke marijuana nor that he was talking about marijuana smokers.

Re: Drop Outs are Killing the Economy

Yeah I always thought it was odd companies will turn you down for not having work experience. But yet if you dont get HIRED some where how can you ever get work experience ??

                Backwards isnt it ?

I was talking to my college I graduated from 8 years ago and told the seniors there.....A job will get you a job. Dont matter if you have to work at Walmart or some fast food joint for a half a year or a year. Work experience is work experience.

You have to pad your resume with something. The days with a resume with nothing but educational stuff and expecting to get hired off of that alone is over.

So dont turn down a job just because you have a bachelors degree or masters degree and you think the job is beneath you. Because if you just sit around waiting on the job you think you deserve comes along, the days will turn into weeks, which will turn into months which will turn into years.

When you could have been working at a store gaining work experience during that time.

                  Not really

Kids can intern any time they want.

Depending on where you live no you cant intern anytime you want. There isnt an abundance of internships anymore either.

In Texas at least, teachers teach the students to pass the TAKS test which is a standardized test taken each April.

Going into my 3rd semester of college and I look back and see how pointless most of HS was. I have relearned all of the material in my core classes since colleges make you take stuff all over again.
Yeah, I agree with this 100% but I'm old school, I never took TAKS only TAAS. lol

Depends on your field. Paid internships arent abundant but there are plenty of unpaid internships.

Oh, I definitely agree. It's called inflation.

When there is more of something (college degrees for example), the less their worth becomes. If everyone has a degree, that degree becomes less and less of a distinguishing factor. The playing field evens out again, and now the college degree has essentially taken the place of what the high school degree used to be.

When I said 80%, I was referencing alcohol drinkers. Sorry for the confusion.

I view drug testing as just another form of discrimination. I know some drug users who do very well in school, but would lose their financial aid if having to undergo drug tests.

Take away the financial aid and the scholarships of the students who aren't pulling their weight. Don't pull it away from the students who are doing well, but are partaking in an activity you disagree with.

TAKS is Texas Assessment (sp?) of Knowledge and Skills. It replaced the TAAS, and I can't remember what it stood for.
